THE DISCOMFORT ZONE: How Leaders Turn Difficult Conversations Into Breakthroughs by Dr. Marcia Reynolds
Leaders, managers, and coaches are charged with getting people to stretch their limits but are often unsuccessful. Top leadership coach Marcia Reynolds says the problem is that when incorrectly handled, difficult conversations create more resistance than growth. Reynolds offers a model and methods for discovering what to say so people change their own minds. As a result, leaders equip people to find their own solutions, see situations more strategically, and grow beyond their limitations.
Reynolds explains how to pick the right time and place to enter the discomfort zone and how to create a “safety bubble” so that people will trust your intentions.
Marcia Reynolds, PsyD, organizational psychologist and certified master coach, is president of Covisioning, a training and coaching firm helping companies worldwide unleash the brilliance in their people. One of the appealing things about sex is the vulnerability. It is a situation where you can be physically vulnerable with another person and let yourself go. It is the discomfort, nervousness, awkwardness, that makes it exciting and more pleasurable. This is why when couples say…”keep it exciting” what they are talking about is trying new things (positions, toys, environments, etc) that taking them a little out of their comfort zone and bring back some of the vulnerable/ awkward feelings.
Why is it that great sex so often fades for couples who claim to love each other as much as ever? Can we want what we already have? Why does good intimacy not guarantee great sex? Why is the forbidden erotic? Why does the transition to parenthood deliver such an erotic blow? And when we love what do we feel and when we desire how is it different?
The topic today is, "The Expectations and demands of Thorns and Thistles." Why is this important, you might well ask? These things seem to result in a somewhat dark perspective of ourselves and our world. We will be looking at the kinds of things that come up which cause discomfort, pain, disappointment all of which usually result in feelings of loss in one way or another. And yet, perspective is a great word that describes where we can go to get relief.
I am choosing to relate to such things as problems, difficulties, stresses and strains as thorns and thistles. They hurt; they cause pain an inflammation not just at the point of friction, but all over ... so it seems. Where do these thorns and thistles come from? Where can we go for help, relief, and direction? There are many ways into these problems, difficulties, stresses and strains, but there is really only one way out. Let's find out how to deal with "The Expectations and Demans of thorns and Thistles."
Denial is an unrealistic hope that a problem is not really happening and will go away by itself.
We all have a natural inclination to rearrange our experiences to fit a positive image of ourselves. This manipulation allows us to preserve our personal integrity, and makes us feel secure. It goes on undetected because it takes place in the private corners of your mind.
When the demands of life require capabilities that seem to exceed our resources, when we feel the threat of loss and exposure, we experience anxiety. In an effort to avoid the pain of anxiety, we practice the deceptive art of denial.
Denial is an unrealistic hope that a problem is not really happening, and will go away of itself. It is an attempt to put distance between ourselves and our experience, and protect ourselves from the threat of danger. In its many forms, denial acts like a pain reliever. The practice of denial is an attempt to ease the discomfort of anxiety by a subtle and ingenious twist of attention.
Denial can become your worst enemy. It diverts your attention, and decreases your mental efficiency by way of trade off. As long as you refuse to accept the truth of your situation, you must of necessity, refuse to give it your attention. Instead you will pay attention to every possible manner of distraction you can employ to support your denial.
