Scott Tips, president and legal counsel for the National Health Federation (NHF), will tell us how harmonized global standards are enabling overall reduced vitamin and mineral levels in pill and food form. In February, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) proposed changes to both the current Nutrition Facts panel on food labels and Supplement Facts panel on dietary supplement labels that prompt concern.
“While the food industry, media and general public focus on the proposed format changes, new wording and label design, there’s a danger to our health in the FDA harmonizing our Reference Daily Intake (RDI) of vitamin and mineral levels down to the extremely low levels of the Codex Alimentarius, which our organization has fought against for more than a decade,” advises Tips.
If the proposed rulemaking is adopted, the NHF anticipates that the FDA will work to conform other recommended nutrient values to those of Codex. Support for this projection is based on an October 11, 1995, FDA pronouncement in the Federal Register to harmonize its food laws with those of the rest of the world.

Today we are going to look at studies done by the Dietary Supplement Education Alliance and the findings that they found that by supplementing ones diet with just a few different vitamins, minerals and essential oils could save $24 Billion in Health Care Costs.
“By the year 2030, there will be over 70 million people aged 65+, with half over the age of 75. This study states that, “Health care for Americans over age 65 could increase to nearly $16 trillion per year.”

Supplements for losing fat or building muscle are rapidly becoming popular. Claims that “fat-burning” supplements will decrease body fat by increasing either mobilization or oxidation of free fatty acids (FFAs) are faulty at best. Untrained individuals have a greater ability to mobilize FFAs than they do to oxidize them. Therefore, supplements that increase FFA mobilization are not of any value for untrained people. For supplements to directly enhance FFA oxidation, the insulin response to the carbohydrates in those supplements would need to be eliminated (since insulin inhibits fat oxidation), and this is unlikely to happen (Coyle 1995). Exercise alone increases the muscles’ capacity to oxidize FFAs.
For those who eat a balanced diet, there is no evidence that muscle-building supplements, including protein powders and amino acids, build muscle mass (Clarkson 1998; Eichner et al. 1999). The few supplements whose muscle-building potential is supported by research (e.g., creatine) are effective mostly in elite athletes who have undergone many years of training (Eichner et al. 1999).

Millions of Americans take multivitamins in the name of better health. In spite of conflicting reports that these supplements combat chronic conditions, top health experts recommend daily multivitamins for nearly everyone.
Read on to find out why multivitamins matter, how to pick the best one, and how to bypass potential problems from the most popular dietary supplements.
Multivitamins: Bridging (Some) Nutrient Gaps
A balanced diet goes a long way to getting the vitamins and minerals you need to feel good and head off health problems. Trouble is, very few people eat right every day.
“When we compare recommendations for vitamin and mineral intakes to actual consumption, many Americans do not even come close to getting what they need for several nutrients,” says Meir Stampfer, MD, DrPH, professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School.
According to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2005, adults are often deficient in:
Vitamin A (as carotenoids)
On this episode of "Doc Talk", I'll be sharing with you the cautions and side effect of taking natural supplements and using herbs. We all know they have benefits, but I'll be sharing more insight as to how and when to use them for optimal health.
Dr. Rene will be discussing eating smart, the correct way to take supplements and food allergies. Our food is getting bigger, but the same amount of nutrients are in a small piece as a big piece, how can we eat more nutritiously? We hear that supplements do not work or a waste of money, but are we taking them the right way? Are the foods you eat the cause of inflamation in your body? Find out this and more listening to Mind-Body-Spirit: Living a Holistic Life.
SuIn this show we will be covering models of healing coming from a broad range of disciplines, integrating the best of modern science with the best of the healing wisdom that has been transmitted to us from the most ancient cultures.

Do you need to use Dietary Supplements? If so, which ones, how much?
It seems that the Fitness industry is always coming out with a new, sexy, fat burning supplement. Unfortunately, most of it is crap.
In this episode I talk about the only supplement that I would say you NEED. I discuss other supplements, which companies that you should buy from.
Are Pre-Workouts Bad for You?
When you want to get the most out of your workout, you make sure every rep, step and weight really counts. Of course, dragging yourself out of bed first thing for a workout can be less than inspiring. Enter the pre-workout supplement, designed to help amp you up for a better, more effective workout. But before you down that caffeine-laced drink, make sure you know how it's going to affect your body during exercise -- you may find that a natural alternative is a healthier choice.
While different pre-wrokout supplements make different claims, their main purpose is to supposedly help you get more out of your workout by increasing your energy and blood flow to the extremities. When taken before a workout, they're designed to help you have better focus, lift heavier and have more energy for a tough workout. A study published in a 2010 issue of the "Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition" found that using a pre-workout before exercise did increase cardiovascular activity and anaerobic running capacity in subjects.
In 1994 Congress passed the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA) to protect consumers ability to purchase dietary supplements. Now 17 years later, the FDA is attempting to re-interpret this act and impose regulations that could shut down the dietary supplement industry. In this podcast, Michael Ostrolenk interviews James Gormley – Vice President and Senior Policy Adviser of Citizens for Health – about their efforts to stop the over-regulation of these popular medical products and organize the vast consumer and industry opposition to these draconian measures. The FDA states that this “guidance” will protect consumers, but in reality the opposite is true; it will harm them by preventing patients from obtaining effective treatments and remedies outside of the control of the medical industrial complex. After listening to the podcast, visit www.Citizens.org to learn what you can do to help.
