Hybrid Jazz From Trish Hennessey - with Oscar Penas (PEA Nyas!)

    in Music

Born in Barcelona, our guest on 11/19/2014 has made QUITE a splash in his adopted country.  Besides the fact that he just voted for the first time - as an American citizen :)  Oscar Penas (I can't wait to say his last name: PEA Nyas!) is a gifted guitarist, composer and bandleader with a new CD that is, indeed, bragworthy.  "Music of Departures and Returns" is full of inspirations that captivate Oscar - who has discussed the reasons why he was so drawn to Jazz after his childhood studies in Classical Music.  He relished the idea of creating melodies and interacting with other musicians.  Pat Metheny and Wayne Shorter were sparks that goaded him early on. Then, the music of Pixinguinha - the flamenco music of Spain that was so infused inside of him - all the ingredients that would define the intoxicating stew of Oscar's music - were taking shape.  This is a gentleman who has won the "ASCAP Plus Award" - so SOMETHING's working :)

Oscar is visiting us for two reasons.  One, he's performing at the prestigious Strathmore in Bethesda, Maryland, in the next few days.  We certainly wanted to call attention to that.  Secondly, this new album, Oscar's fourth, is full of music that enriches the soul.  Esperanza Spalding and Paquito D'Rivera are featured - as is producer, arranger and pianist, Gil Goldstein.  He also focuses on quartet: six-string electric bassist Moto Fukushima, drummer Richie Barshay, and the world-class violinist, Sara Caswell.

Besides being an alluring guitarist - both intelligent and earthy - Oscar is a wise man.  He knew that, after his education at Berklee and the New England Conservatory, he would have to stand out in the sea of sublime artistry that populates New York City.  So, he dug deeply, honoring his roots and his passion for Jazz.  The results will make your ears thank you :)

New Leads and Emerging Preogatives - Chatting Sweeps Week!

    in Entertainment

This week on Littany we will be covering both Days of Our Lives and The Bold and The Beautiful. Both shows had action packed sweeps weeks and we are excited to chat about comings and goings, exits and emerging stories.

A lot has happened the past two weeks on Days of Our Lives: Sami Brady left for Hollywood, JJ and Eve's commiserating lead to something much more, Jordan's secret was revealed, Chad got the best of Ben and Kristen exited with a big bang that no one saw coming. We want to get fan thoughts on these departures and discuss the arrival of some new and familiar faces in the upcoming weeks. With Sami, Kristen and eventually Jordan leaving, what characters and stories will Days focus on? Also, how will these changes impact current stories and characters?

The Bold and the Beautiful has also been action packed with Ridge and Caroline's feelings being revealed in a ver public way. Many fans have opinions on how Ric, Maya, Ridge and others have responded in the aftermath of this scandal. We also see Liam and  Ivy getting closer and Hope and Wyatt try to focus on their baby despite Quinn's constant meddling. With the news that Kim Matula has stopepd filming, we wonder if Hope will be leaving or the character will be recast. What does this mean for the Liam/Hope/Wyatt triangle?

Join us for an hour of soap chat. We can't wait to discuss all things sweeps and as always will have a live chat for fans while we are live. We will also be taking fan calls. We look forward to chatting with you all!

Hennepin County's unfair plan to marginalize the black body w/John Woods

    in News

On Thursday's program, we start with Mr. John Woods, founder of New Perspectives starts us off on how Hennepin County has an unfair process.

Here's the history: In 2012, 4,161 individuals were approved for chemical dependency treatment in Hennepin County. The Hennepin County review team (based out of the 1800 Chicago Hennepin County Community Services Agency) reviewed these individuals in 2012. Of those, 1,361 (32.7 percent) were classified as African American and approved for chemical dependency treatment. Of those 1,361 African American individuals seeking CD services, New Perspectives received only 48 approvals (6.5 percent).

Woods claims this is not something that only his organization is facing; he says African American Family Services and Turning Point, Inc. have also been victims of this referral process. Woods believes that this flawed referral process, which he identifies as a form of “systematic racism,” was an essential factor in the recent merger of African American Family Services with another agency.

African American Family Services received 42 approvals (5.7 percent). Turning Point Inc. was the only culturally specific program that received numbers that approach reasonable: Turning Point received 122 approvals (16.6 percent). The majority-White owned and operated organizations, Park Avenue and Recovery Resource Center, received the majority of the referrals. Park Avenue received 237 African American approvals (32 percent), and Recovery Resource Center (RRC) received 158 African American approvals (21.5 percent).

The Minneapolis NAACP has been silent about the recent departures of its exeutive committee.

Al Flowers and CSI, what's really going on?
Minneapolis Department of Civil Rights and Velma Korbel - you need to go!
