Airlines thinking of charging by how much you weigh
S amoa Air has become the first airline to charge passengers according to how much they weigh. The company carries travelers on hops between Pacific islands that have some of the highest obesity rates in the world. Instead of charging for each seat, Samoa Air has started weighing passengers along with their luggage, and charging them a fee reflecting the total, depending on the length of the flight. Fees range from about $1 to $4 per kilo (2.2 pounds), meaning passengers pay a little under $50 to $200 per 100 lbs. "This is the fairest way of traveling," Samoa Air CEO Chris Langton says. "There are no extra fees in terms of excess baggage or anything.

Delta And The 1913 Women's Suffrage March
Alice Paul, the great Suffrage March organizer didn’t want them. The sight of 22 Black women from Howard University was disruptive to her cause. And Southern Whites certainly had no use for them. They were considered the inferior race, prime targets for lynching, discrimination and real violence against women.
The time: March 1913. The day before the inauguration of President Elect Woodrow Wilson, who certainly had NO use for Black People or uppity women who did not know their place.
Despite all odds and the racial tension of the era, they marched anyway. They held the banner for the organization they had just formed two months earlier. Little did they realize that their act of courage would signal an ultimate victory that gave ALL women the right to vote by 1920.
Now 100 years later the 22 gave way to over 300,000 members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. Armed with that historic sense of courage, my organization marched 15,000 strong on March 3, 2013 down the very Washington Streets that the original 22 walked for the cause. I was there on March 3rd, and this show is dedicated to the 22 who made the difference.
My name is Carole Copeland Thomas. I am proud member of Delta Sigma Theta, and this is Focus On Empowerment!

Southwest Airlines: Operating for People and Planet
Laurel Moffat
Outreach Communication, Southwest Airlines
Note from Mrs. Green: It is a RARE occurrence for us to do a repeat show. But alas! We bring you our most popular show of 2013 – a great reminder of allSouthwest Airlines does for the planet and how much they helped with getting the Ben’s Bells Project to Newtown, Connecticut only three short months ago. Read all about it.
Not only does SWA (and trust me, I fly SWA) not charge you for your bags AND still give you peanuts and pretzels AND frequently entertain you during your flight, they are going greener every day in every way they can. I am nuts about them. “Our performance, our people, our planet.” Don’t you want to know what this industry leader is doing to be a good steward of the planet?
Thanks to Goodwill Industries of Southern Arizona for sponsoring this show.
