Etan Thomas is More Than An Athlete. He’s been called a “gentle giant.” A “rebounder with a cause.” “The Poet”. Thomas defies the stereotype of the apolitical athlete, and plants his roots in his budding literary career with the conviction of a Bill Russell, and poetic finesse of Muhammad Ali. Born in Harlem and raised in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Thomas’ childhood was surrounded by books on the civil rights movement, politics and the 1960′s. He was greatly influenced by his mother and school teacher, Deborah Thomas.
In 2005 he released a collection of poems called More Than An Athlete; In January 2013 he released Voices Of The Future a collection of poems and essays from young writers on topics such as Racism, Trayvon Martin, President Obama, Gun Violence, Aids etc. On May of 2012 he released Fatherhood (Rising To The Ultimate Challenge) and his writings have appeared in CNN, ESPN, The Washington Post, Huff Post, Hoopshype.com and slamonline, and he co-hosts the radio program "The Collision: Sports and Politics with Etan Thomas & Dave Zirin. My guest on the Author Chat show is author Dwight Slaughter. Dwight will be chatting with me about his new book, Inner City Strength-The Last Unknown Name Slaughter
About the book:
If you fall down get up and finish. Dwight Slaughter graduated from Verbum Dei High School, a school with one of the top 10 winning basketball teams of all time. While at Verbum Dei High School Dwight was voted number one player in the Country in 1972 by different sports magazines. He then went on to further his education and play basketball at Cal State Los Angeles from 1972 to 1976-a period that would set a precedent with new laws changing how colleges accept athletes. During his athletic career, Slaughter was interviewed by such greats as Howard Cosell, on his show SportsBeat and in his book, I Never Played the Game; Morley Safer from 60 Minutes; and John Chancellor from World Nightly News. He was voted by ESPN and Sports Illustrated as one of the top 100 basketball players in the State of California. As a child, Slaughter relied on basketball to build his self-esteem and relieve the stress of mental and physical abuse. His gripping memoir follows his public career and takes the reader inside his personal life as well-into a childhood of abuse, betrayal...even murder.

My guest today is Debbie Barrett who has a site called "Paintracking"
Deborah Barrett, PhD, MSW, LCSW is a clinical associate professor in the School of Social Work at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and a psychotherapist in private practice. She has published self-help articles on fibromyalgia and other chronic pains as well as scholarly papers on health and illness, global culture, and public policy.
"I came to the topic of this book through my own struggles with pain. I developed severe pain, fairly suddenly, in my late 20s, after having enjoyed many years unencumbered by any health problems beyond an occasional cold or minor injury. Once my pain began, however, it seemed relentless. Even after I was diagnosed and tried various treatments, the pain persisted. The pain seemed to worsen out of the blue, which made my life unpredictable and frightening. But every so often I would experience a short reprieve."
