• "Deadbeat Dads & The Women Who Love Them"

    in Lifestyle

SPONSORED BY MARK PITTMAN--Single parenthood is on the rise. It's quite possibly one of the biggest contributing factors to the lack of confidence, misguided, and angry youth of today. No, single parenthood in itself is not to blame, but the usual circumstances of abandonment that created the one-parent household are. Both genders are equally guilty of child abandonment, and both are guilty of being the supportive domestic partners/spouses of these deadbeat parents.

Part One of this two-part series focuses on the deadbeat fathers and the women who accept and support them knowing they don't provide for their children.  Does this support help the problem or further enable the irresponsible behavior and mindset of the deadbeat parent? Should "Deadbeat Dads" Be Sent To Jail?

    in Women

When marriages break apart, often it is the mother who is granted custodial rights to the children, and the father is instructed to pay a certain amount of his income to the family for child support. But what happens when fathers don't pay the court ordered financial support? Some men have been arrested and jailed for being "deadbeat dads." Is this really an incentive for a father to pay for his child's well being? Some fathers are bitter at mothers and choose to avoid their families because of this. Isn't fatherhood more than a paycheck? Many men don't come around their families if they are going through financial hardship. What should father's do when they just don't have the money to pay? What should we do to encourage fathers to continue to be involved in their children's lives even when the relationship between the mother and father is over?

It's Real (Episode 15): Deadbeat Dads

    in Dads and Family

Tonight's show is about deadbeat dads. The men who call themselves fathers but don't see their kids, don't spend quality time with them, and don't contribute financially. The percentage of men who neglect their kids is constantly growing and this is a major concern.
What we'd like to know is why this is happening and what can be done to start preventing it. Ask yourself: How important is it for a child to have a father? Is it fair that most women are left to raise their children by themselves?
These are some disturbing issues and they will be addressed on tonight's show so make sure you tune in.

#126 Azim Khamisa, Author - Peace Activist

    in Education

The Watch D.O.G.S. (Dads of Great Students) Program is the largest school based father engagement program in the nation with over 4500 schools participating.

Azim Khamisa – an author, activist and an international inspirational speaker – was born in Kenya, Africa and had early training in mathematics, economics and finance in the U.K. A successful investment banker with over 40 years of experience, he has conducted business in Africa, Middle East, Canada, USA, Europe and Asia. Presently he serves as the President of the Child Safety Network (CSN). Committing his life to halting the continuing cycle of violence among the youth, Azim became a social activist after his 20-year-old son Tariq was senselessly  murdered while delivering pizzas in January 1995 by Tony Hicks, a 14-year-old gang member. Out of grief and despair,  Khamisa was inspired to transform his loss through the power of forgiveness. Believing that there were “victims at both ends of the gun,” Azim forgave Tony and founded the Tariq Khamisa Foundation to break the cycle of youth violence by saving lives, empowering positive choices and teaching the principles of nonviolence and peacemaking. A month after establishing the foundation, Azim invited Ples Felix, Tony’s grandfather and guardian, to join him. Together, since November 1995, the two have brought their story and message through  TKF’s Violence Impact Assemblies. The duo has reached over a million elementary and middle school children live and over 8 million via video programs, guiding the youth to choose a peacemaker’s life of non-violence and forgiveness.

Each week, WatchDOGS Radio host Keith Schumacher and co-host Chris Danenhauer discuss how this program is impacting families and schools across our nation and in four foreign countries.

    Dads Corp with Jorge Narvaez

    in Dads and Family

You might remember him from the Ellen Show, NBC’s Americas Got Talent, that Hyundai Commercial or I am sure you have seen his daughter and his beautiful duet of the Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros song “Home” on YouTube!

What you see is a loving father singing with his daughter Alexa, what you might not know is the struggles this man has faced throughout his life and the work he is currently doing with Dad’s Corp (a program with SAY San Diego dedicated towards empowering fathers to succeed in being partners, parents, and providers)

Jorge’s has overcome so much in his personal life, from growing up in a city that everyone thinks is pretty but never get the opportunity to see the gritty; Jorge overcame the odds from middle school to high school he says “it was all about staying alive” staying clear of gang violence and keeping yourself out of trouble wasn’t an easy road to take but Jorge did it.

During his youth Jorge and his then girlfriend became teen parents, becoming a teen parent is a super hard task and takes an extraordinary support system in order to be able to finish high school and take on the responsibility of parenthood, but the odds got stacked against Jorge even more when he mother was deported back to mexico.

Jorge is doing incredible work today in the community of San Diego with the Dads Corp Program and on Wednesday February 18th he will be doing a free fathers legal clinic helping fathers understand their rights and provide legal support resources at the Midcity Family Resource Center off El Cajon Blvd.
