Critical acclaim has greeted Alan Russell's novels from coast to coast. Publisher's Weekly calls him, "One of the best writers in the mystery field today. The New York Times says, "He has a gift for dialogue," while the Los Angeles Times calls him, "A crime fiction rara avis." Russell's ten novels have ranged from whodunits to comedic capers to suspense, and his works have been nominated for most of the major awards in crime fiction. His novels have garnered him a Critics' Choice Award, The Lefty (awarded to the best humorous mystery of the year), and two San Diego Book Awards. Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. founder Scott Barnett is LIVE on Authors on the Air

    in Books

Written in a cinematic style, Gumption is about the creation, growth, and sale of the Bubba Gump Shrimp Company. The concept began when Paramount Pictures reached out to see if there was interest in creating a restaurant based on the movie Forrest Gump. It is also the personal story of the author’s growth as a CEO and creator of restaurant concepts. A host of situations are described such as restaurant concept creation, high stakes boardroom confrontations, and escaping corrupt officials in foreign lands. The narrative is partly an unvarnished peak behind the everyday scenes of restaurants, movie studios, and Wall Street. There is also an almost step-by-step recounting of how the Bubba Gump concept and others were created and operated.  Authors on the Air host Pam Stack welcome the founder of the Bubba Gump Shrimp Company Scott Barnett who is here LIVE to talk about his book Gumption.

Authors Supporting Authors with Mary Ellen Danuser

    in Self Help

Show airs at 8:00 pm EST/AST; 7:00 pm CST; 6:00 pm MST; and 5:00 pm PST.

Mary Ellen Danuser book, Freedom to Choose, sheds light as to why some people choose to date and marry outside their race. She believes that issues on interracial relationships are not fairly understood in today's society, partly attributed to the lack of public awareness on the subject. In turn it is the result of scarcely documented literature deeply addressing the case from the rare personal viewpoint. With this in mind, she wrote Freedom to Choose - Is Skin Color Really an Issue?” a compilation of true stories from interracially married couples all over the US, including the author’s real-life experiences.

The book mainly tells the story of Mary Ellen and her spouse, John Dakota, a retired Marine officer and commercial pilot, interpolated with the narratives of the couples she has interviewed. It offers a rare look into the lives of these couples, revealing insights as to the rationales why some people choose their mates outside their race - a portrait of motive, intent, and personal choice. The real names of the pairs are withheld but the experiences shared are authentic and real.

Mary Ellen, who served in the US Army as a medical specialist and an Army recruiter, is a retired insurance professional. With her husband she enjoys traveling, attending car races, dining out, outdoor concerts, reading, walking, sightseeing, and just hanging out with each other. Mary Ellen, born in Springfield, Illinois, grew up in Vandalia, Missouri. Because her passion since her retirement is writing non-fiction books, she is working on her second non-fiction book.

"Waiting for the One" author L.A. Fiore LIVE on Authors on the Air

    in Books

One of the most exquisite romance books I've ever read is "Waiting for the One".  Author L.A Fiore's story wrenched every emotion I had right out of me and I'm so delightfed to welcome her to Authors on the Air.  Liz wrote and said this:  "I love writing; love creating worlds of my own and characters that, after the journey we share, feel more like real members of my family. The goal of my writing is to not just tickle your funny bone but to also touch a nerve. I want readers to feel every emotion when reading one of my books: from ecstatic joy to exquisite pain. I want you to laugh and cry and when you come to the end, I want you to feel as if you lost a little piece of yourself to the story. My two latest releases are Waiting for the One, released on April 28th, a quirky romance with a dark side and A Glimpse of the Dream, releasing on July 7th, a love story about second chances with a twist. I hope you give them a try and enjoy the emotional ride."  Visit L.A. Fiore here on https://www.facebook.com/l.a.fiore.publishing.

Suspense writer Linda Prather joins Authors on the Air LIVE to discuss writing

    in Books

Authors on the Air Host Pam Stack welcomes suspense and paranormal writer Linda Prather.  Linda says this: "Something was missing in my life.  I wanted to write.  No, actually I needed to write.  In the mid 90s I joined a group called Green River Writers in Louisville, Kentucky.  The next five years contain many of my fondest memories of being a part of a group of authors.  Critiquing and being critiqued.  Learning to hone a craft that isn't simply putting words on a page.  I combined my love of mysteries with my love of metaphysics.  The payoff?  In 2005 I submitted my first novel, The Gifts, A Jacody Ives Mystery to Echelon Press, a small trade publisher.  After several months of nail biting and walking the floor I was offered a contract to publish.  Wow! I believed The Gifts to be a good book, but my readers amazed me even more when it took 2nd place in the Preditor's and Editor's contest for best novel of 2006 and was nominated for The David Award.  Reader requests resulted in my writing a prequel, Sacred Secrets, which has not been released by Amazon Digital. Research into the third Jacody Ives Mystery led to my studies in the paranormal research field, as well as my becoming a Paranormal Investigator.  I'm currently working on the 3rd and 4th Jacody Ives Mystery as well as a suspense novel and legal thriller."

Authors Supporting Authors with Mr. Is Said

    in Self Help

Mr. Is Said is an art form from the Continent of Africa. An author, mentor, community-based activist and educator, Is Said provides sage leadership on a national level and in the greater Columbus, Ohio arts community. He conceives, stages, writes, and performs unique multimedia arts events, combining visionary, historical-based poetry or prose synergistically with high-energy African music and dance.

Is Said has traveled to Africa every year for the last 30 years. According Is Said, “Storytelling helps an audience to use their imagination and work together as a group. It stretches the mind beyond the sounds of joy and beauty. It is shapes of twisted information weaving a story and bringing the audience into your story.”

Mr. Said usually tell stories that require a cast made up of member from the audience to act out the story. This gives the audience a chance to see and be right in the story as it unfolds messages of fun and history.

“Storytelling is much like performing performance poetry: one uses their whole body to tell the story.”

Minor rules of storytelling: Every story must have a beginning, middle, and an ending, characters, dialogue, location, place of action, moral, message, sometimes music, dance, animals, conflicts and conclusions. The most important thing about understanding a story is, using your imagination.

Is Said has written two short stories: Street Justice and Picking Cotton: A collection of our Elders lives and History called "The Table is Set”. Is Said has also written about 45 plays since 1973.
