In 2003, Maggie Jarry and Joe Donovan began a series of discussions, which led to the development of a national network of daughters and sons of parents with mental illness. In time, this network would come to be known as The Daughters and Sons Initiative. On this, our inaugural episode, Joe and Maggie are joined by Cheri Bragg Acker and Mike McCarthy. We will be discussing this Initiative; it’s history, achievements and hopes for the future. We will also explain how this new show, The Daughters & Sons Hour, will seek to support and expand on the efforts of the Initiative.

"Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies." (Proverbs 31:10 KJV) The words of King Lemuel's mother resounds throughout generations to this day. The intimate conversation between a mother and her son to instruct him in wisdom and the key to his good success. As we eavesdrop on a mother sharing her heart in preparing her son for life, one might become intimidated by the supernatural qualities this woman seems to possess: She's a wife, a mother, a business woman. She owns land and has servants. She's shrewd yet prudent in her business and personal affairs and manages her time well. She's trustworthy and well respected within her home by her husband, children and in her community and is known abroad. This sister has it going on! How can a woman of this century even come close to this woman? Is it possible to be everything to everyone without losing yourself in the process? How can we become the woman that this Proverbial 31 sister has modeled?
Join us as we explore the makings of the Proverbs 31 woman. Visit our page at the Kingdom United Ministries Network website and invite others to "Like", join and share. You are welcome!
I have always been intrigued with the plight of women and the mechanics of our relationships with other women. More specifically, the dynamics of best friends, mothers and daughters, and how we interact with women we don’t know.
I want to give this subject a platform because I find it difficult to understand how women, the most nurturing human beings on earth, are unable to unify and support one another. Why are we so envious of each? What creates that volatile atmosphere? What is creating the poor self-esteem and lack of confidence so many of our sisters and young girls have?
This discussion will be broken down into a series of micro conversations which will specially address the various relationships we cultivate as women. The first conversation will address Mothers & Daughters.
We're lucky to have Life Coach, Cherie Avinger, as our guest. Cherie will be sharing her professional advice and guidance regarding how to improve or maintain that special mother/daughter relationship. We will also be joined by Ms. Cheryl Laylock. Cheryl will be sharing her advice on how she has been able to sustain a very respectful and nurturing relationship with her two adult daughters.
Please feel free to join the conversation this Sunday, March 22 at 5pm. Guest dial-in (713) 955-0703.
This week on WTTA, our topic of discussion will be quite interesting. After airing, “The Delicate Dynamics of Mothers and Daughters”, I received a message from a male listener who shared some of his experiences as a single father and his relationship with his daughter. He suggested I do a show about the topic and volunteered to share his experiences. Within the last two weeks, I had a chance to connect with another single father of a daughter who was also willing to share his experiences.
Tim and Vince will give their unique perspective on being a single parent and what that entails. When we hear the title 'single parent', most of us naturally assume a female is the head of household. In reality, there are quite a few single dads out there playing the role of dad AND mom. I can testify that raising a male child as a single mom definitely has its challenges. I’m curious to learn if we share similar experience and how they handle all of the little nuances that come with trying to raise a secure, intelligent woman.
I’d like to know: How do you handle the hair issues? Dating? Her period? Do you date a lot? How soon is too soon to introduce women to daughters? How do you deal with the attitudes? I definitely have questions lol.
The show will air Sunday, April 26, 2015 at 5:00 EST. The Guest Call-In number is (713) 955-0703.
Hope you can join the conversation.
Peace & Kind Regards,
Myths, misunderstandings and stereotypes are common when discussing persons who have been diagnosed with a mental illness. The "stigma of mental illness" can lead to the adoption of discriminatory and abusive practices. Over the last decade, much has been written about "stigma", but not it's impact on children.
Tonight, Mike leads us in discussion on the impact "stigma" has on Daughters/Sons. We'll be reviewing a few themes: the messages young children receive; the messages that D&S tell themselves as they form identities separating them from their parents; the messages we receive from service providers and others involved in mental health advocacy. We will also share how discriminatory practices can impact the lives of children.
We will finish by addressing positive experiences and messages, which can lead to resiliency and improved self-esteem.
Please join Dr. Bessie and mothers and daughters from around the World each Saturday morning at 10:00 AM for a stimulating conversation about mothers and their daughters. In this fast paced world we live in, the demands of life can become stressful. Many women (who are nurturers by nature) are so focused on serving the needs of family, work, ministry etc. that they neglect taking time to get rejuvenated themselves. Have you been there? How have you dealt with finding the time to get in the Word and hear from God while meeting the daily demands of life? Or, are you among those who are asking the question "How can I get better control of my life and grow in my relationship with The Lord too?"
Join us as we engage in a roundtable discussion on this episode. Visit our web page by visiting www.kingdomcomenet.com. Invite others and share. You are welcome!
