Understand how ISIS became ISIS; Will McCants talks about his new book

    in News

    It’s Wednesday October 21st.

So do you really understand what ISIS is?

We’ll find out -- with an expert.

Will McCants directs the Project on US Relations with the Islamic World at the Brookings Institution.  He also teaches at Johns Hopkins University.  He was also a senior adviser for countering violent extremism at the State Department.  He has just written a book called ISIS Apocalypse: The History, Strategy, and Doomsday Vision of the Islamic State – which I just finished on audible.

How Russian military intervention and Vladimir Putin have changed the situation?

Let me give some of my take-aways for folks who haven’t read the book.  First, this was not a political treatise but an academic view at how ISIS began.  Second, there are no real solutions – or easy solutions – to this problem. I mention this because I think opposing sides in the US obscure what is really happening there – or what can be done.  Is there a real solution to ending ISIS?

US boots on the ground usually ends up in disaster or encouraging more jihadists.  Same thing here?

In the short run, ISIS can last with its terror tactics and destroy a lot of lives.  But in the long run, can we assume they won’t exist as a state offering services to its so-called subjects?

Do we need to worry about ISIS attacking us here?

Morally corrupt ISIS leaders are in their use of the Koran to justify their barbarism.

Usama bin Laden was actually moderate and forward thinking compared to ISIS breakaway leaders.

Most Americans are confused and apathetic about foreign policy issues because they just don’t understand what is happening there.

    Talk about the website Jihadica.

Going To War Too Fast? We need to consider both sides of war and anti-war

    in News

It seems many media commentators -- and those on social media -- are attacking the president for his performance in Turkey yesterday.

I watched it.  Granted, he wasn’t Churchill.  But he wasn’t as bad as most of the commentators – – – especially those on the right – – said he was.

Just to clarify: no one has the answer for ISIS.

All we have our actions that we in the west can take and then the unintended consequences to follow.

So, Obama is probably wrong.  And so are his critics.

Here's what I saw yesterday that you are not hearing from a lot of the pundit class.

I saw a president who is an introvert and not an extrovert. Read Susan Cain’s book called Quiet: The Power of Introverts In A World That Can’t Stop Talking.  For too long, we have been ruled by extroverts who – many of us believe – just act quickly without regard for long-term consequences or really looking ahead.

Obama is an introvert president which is what we wanted – as a reaction to the previous administration.

But Obama is also a politician -- looking at the polls. And I think he still sees an American public that is not interested in going back to war or sending over our youth to die or get destroyed in a foreign land.

I read a post on Facebook from a friend, Terry Prince, who said if were so anxious to go to war then will those politicians agree to send their kids over? Is that an isolationist reaction? Sure. But, like me, who has been with Marines and soldiers who have ruined their lives because of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq -- then this argument deserves some credence.  Granted, a lot of those young men and women say it was their duty to go over and fight and their commitment.

Media Bias Rules and Ben Carson

    in POTUS

The media is biased.  Get over.

The majority of Americans are the reason why the media is biased.

If you look at the media in totality then it is unbiased.  We have a whole panoply of biases to look at and ingest.

If a politician is screaming media bias, then he has a problem.

No one has gotten elected based on screaming about the media being unfair.

Here are the rules for posting on social media and having social discourse.

Your goal should be creating a state of awareness not a platform for people to have to agree with everything you say.
