"Courage is fire, and bullying is smoke," stated former British Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli. Adult bullying is a rising concern in the real world and online. Adults are as malicious as bad kids on the playground, but no one is supervising their activity or protecting their targets. And their victims are other adults who are not immune to the trauma of bullying. When one uses superior strength or influence to intimidate others, that’s classic bullying. Emotional abuse is characterized by subjecting another to behavior that may result in psychological trauma, like anxiety, chronic depression, or post-traumatic stress disorder. In one Seinfeld episode, George and Jerry recall their tyrannical gym teacher who used to give boys wedgies and encourage them to beat each other up. Girls don’t do anything like that, do they? Jerry asks Elaine. Oh no, Elaine replies. We just tease each other until one of us develops an eating disorder. The worst part of being bullied or abused in a relationship, is that often you don’t even realize it’s happening. Manipulative people twist your thoughts, actions, wants, and desires into something that better suits how they see the world. Bullies don’t want cooperation, they want control. Emotional bullying is often subtle and found in adult relationships and in the workplace. An emotional bully might use sarcasm, threaten, belittle, or humiliate. Bullying is a problem in many schools throughout Missouri. In February, Blake Kitchen, a young student with Asperger's was beaten at Liberty Middle School. Blake is still recovering from serious injuries he suffered in the attack.
Blake's family and others had reached out to various school officials several times about bullying concerns leading up to the day Blake was attacked. Blake was discovered laying unconscious on the cafeteria floor in a pool of his own blood before receiving medical attention.
Though school officials weren't quick to make any statements, the severity of the situation, and Blake's injuries rapidly captured attention throughout the state, including lawmakers like Senator Eric Schmitt.
In a passionate plea on the Senate floor, the usually mild mannered Senator urged bipartisan action from colleagues to address the problems with bullying in Missouri's schools. Schmitt said he was speaking from the heart about the issue, and that all kids have the right to expect to be safe in their schools.

For children, being intimidated at school by a bully can lead to a lot of emotional problems. A child may avoid school, claiming to be sick. A child may actually develop a psychosomatic sickness, where the body creates the symptoms of an illness in response to the mind saying that the body is in fact sick. When children exhibit signs of anxiety and distress adults need to pay attention, it could be warning signs of bullying. Adults should get involved and meet with parents of the child who is guilty of bullying and and make sure the behavior is stopped. Easy to do when you can see the attacker, but in today's technological world, bullying has often taken the form of cruel teasing and mean insults in the Internet, spread anonymously through social media. How do we combat "cyber bullying"? What are the emotional effects of such behavior on children? Today members of the Garfield Youth Organization discuss their efforts to raise awareness about Cyber Bullying
We have all heard of our children being bullied in school, but we rarely hear of adults suffering the same faith in the work place.
