CM Radio - July 30, 2014 - Bahamas, North Lakes, Big Red Music Festival

    in Music

We're really glad to have Bahamas - aka Afie Jurvanen - on this week's show. Bahamas is set to release his third album, Bahamas is Afie, on August 18, 2014 via Universal Music Canada and Jack Johnson’s Brushfire Records worldwide. The album title even is a big part of the story here - a symbol of Afie taking ownership of the name Bahamas. It’s a self titled record of sorts, that for lack of a better term is kind of a revealing moment in his career which has come with some high acclaim both here in Canada and the US and overseas. The music is expansive, thoughtful, full of huge catchy hooks that are at the same time beautiful and a really fun listen. He also unleashes some incredible guitar playing to boot. Be sure to keep an eye for that...

We've also got an interview with Nathan Gill, frontman of Charlottetown rock outfit The North Lakes, talking about the band's in-the-works third release. They've had a busy summer, performing tracks from 2012's stellar Grand Prix at fests like Evolve and Big Red Music Festival.

And on that note, we also catch up with Jeff Squires and Alex Douglas, two of the organizers behind Big Red Music Festival, which this year brought massive acts like The Killers, Death Cab For Cutie, Marianas Trench, Sam Roberts Band, and Lights to Canada's smallest province. Join us for a quick peek behind the scenes of yet another great Canadian music event.

    Wolves As Shepherds

    in Christianity

In this episode, blogger Sacerdotus speaks on the scandals in the priesthood.  He mentions some scandals in the news and the absurdities surrounding them.  The priesthood of Christ is Holy, but is entrusted to sinful men.

What do we do when we hear of a "priest gone wild?"  Sacerdotus answers this and many other questions surrounding scandals in the priesthood and reminds us that fallen human nature does not take away the holiness and dignity of the priesthood.

He speaks on the situation involving John Corapi, Fr. Frank Pavone and others. Sacerdotus also speaks on disgraced former priest, Alberto Cutie who is currently speaking ill of the Catholic Church after being caught in a scandal with a woman.

Interview with Vintage Jazz Singer/ Songwriter @Minna_Valentine

    in Music

Minna Valentine aka Minna Valance is an American singer-songwriter born and raised in Southern California. Although, she was raised here in LA as a true "California Girl", Minna does not really fit into the stereo type of the blonde haired, golden skinned, cutie. Instead, her red hair and fair complexion emanate more of a classic beauty while she carries herself with the elegance and grace of some of Hollywood's most memorable icons.

LA Music Award Winner, Minna Valentine, has been working diligently in the studio on her retro vintage inspired jazz album, Hopeless Romantic. Minna's voice has a beautifully unique sound for this day and age. Her delightfully rare style will remind you of styles from some of Americas most loved and respected vintage jazz singers from the 1930's, 40's & 50's. Another trait that differentiates Minna from most singing sensations is that every song on her album was written personally, from the heart, by Minna Valentine.

Father Albert Cutie-Author Dilemma Tuesday on Scott Cluthe's Positively Incorrect!

    in Books

Scott Cluthe interviews Father Albert Cutie, author of Dilemma:A Priest’s Struggle with Faith and Love. Albert Cutie is currently an Episcopalian priest, and also well known as Padre Alberto. Cutié was ordained a Roman Catholic priest in 1995 and was internationally known by hosting TV and radio shows. He left the Roman Catholic Church in May 2009 over theological differences with the church but still continue serving God as a married priest. Cutie was received as an Episcopal priest on May 29, 2010.His love affair became international news. Now Father Albert Cutié has authored his deeply personal and controversial memoir,Dilemma. Father Cutié tells about the devastating struggle between upholding his sacred promises as a Roman Catholic priest and falling in love. Already conflicted with growing ideological differences with the Church, Cutié was forced to abruptly change his life the day that he was photographed on the beach, embracing the woman who is now his wife. Once a poster boy of the Church, loved and admired by millions, Cutié found that he was not happy and able to live as a celibate priest, especially having to defend the number of positions he was no longer in agreement with. His struggle with the mandatory celibacy for Catholic priests, and tehn breaking away led to a new way of life and discovering a new way of serving God.

Solar and Rock and Roll building a brighter future

    in Energy

Youness Scally is a Co-Founder of Everybody Solar and proudly serves as the organizations first Executive Director. Youness guides Everybody Solar to run efficiently and grow its impact in bringing clean energy to outstanding local non-profits. His passion for clean energy and his concern for current and future generations drives his desire to expand the reach of the solar energy movement to the non-profit realm.
Trapdoor Social:  After meeting in an Environmental Analysis program at Pomona College, Trapdoor Social’s Merritt Graves and Skylar Funk bonded over a deep concern for the future of the planet. The two writers bring very different styles to the studio, and what results is a driving, emotive alt-pop experience. The duo introduced themselves with the “Death Of A Friend” EP, released in December 2012.  Produced by Curt Schneider, it features Death Cab For Cutie’s Jason McGerr on drums.  They will donate 100% of proceeds from their forthcoming full-length album to solar energy projects in Los Angeles, in collaboration with Homeboy Industries, a local non-profit that re-trains former gang members for jobs in the economies of the future. Their point is clear – climate change is an urgent matter, and music must be one way to build support for solutions. Earlier this year, Trapdoor Social’s “Like You Never” was the #1 listener requested track on KROQ’s “Locals Only” show, and they have since enjoyed radio play from a number of major market stations around the US, including regular rotation on Q87.7 in Chicago.
