Herptile Hour - Milk and King Snakes

    in Environment

On Saturday June 27th at 8pm est, 7pm cst and 5pm pst, join hosts Ken McKeighen and Chris Weatherford as they talk about the care and keeping of the milk and king snakes. This beautiful reptiles are very popular in the reptile hobby. Common, or Eastern, king snakes are medium-sized snakes reaching three to six feet (.9 to 1.8 m) in length. Often called 'chain snakes' or 'chain kings' because of the white chain-like markings on their body, this snake is easily recognized. The snake is a shiny black with a criss-cross pattern of white or yellow lines. The stomach is checkered in black and yellow. They have smooth scales and a single anal plate.

Milk snakes can be from 35 to 175 cm long, with the longest snakes being found in Mexico and Central America. In the United States lengths are usually 60 to 130 cm. They are very colorful snakes and their colors vary throughout their range. All milk snakes have a blotchy or striped appearance, with darker blotches separated by lighter stripes. The color of those darker blotches can be very light to very dark, from tan to rust colored to dark brown. The ligher areas can be orange, yellow, or white. The darker areas are always outlined in black. Milk snakes have 19 to 23 rows of smooth scales and a single anal plate.

Modern Day Music Prodigy, Nolan Garrett

    in Indie Music

NWP welcomes Tacoma music prodigy Nolan Garrett!

Raised on a steady diet of Jimi Hendrix, John Mayer, Alice In Chains and The Black Keys, Tacoma’s Nolan Garrett is just as accomplished as a fiery axe-slinger as he is an ambitious songwriter. A mere moment’s scan of his unique artistic amalgamation suggests an artist on the verge of something extraordinary as personified in his gutsy blend of timeless rock n’ roll, sophisticated pop, elements of grunge and garage rock, doused with just the right of amount of blues on the fire.
For an artist of any age, it’s surely an electrifying dichotomy, but considering Garrett is a mere 17-years-old, it suggests he’s nothing short of a modern day prodigy. Yet even with youth on his side, the versatile performer is already a veteran of sorts who first started playing at age 8, took to the professional stage a year later and is currently criss-crossing the Northwest as a weekend warrior while he maintains a straight A average at the highly coveted Tacoma School of the Arts.

“I wasn’t very good at sports, so I decided to try music and picked up the guitar, but when the day of my first lesson came around, I didn’t even want to go,” he lets out with a laugh of those pre-teen beginnings. “But after my first lesson, I was hooked, and besides having a knack for it, I was able to get instant results where there wasn’t any competition. http://www.nolangarrett.net
