An Edmond teenager faces a possible life in prison sentence after authorities say they learned about shocking crimes he allegedly committed on an African mission trip.
The suspect was volunteering at a Kenyan children’s home when he allegedly raped and molested a number of young children.
Karen Romano Young was frequently wet during her early years. Despite not actually having webbed feet, she spent much of her nonschool time up to her knees in the Atlantic, Long Island Sound, or the Mill River in her hometown of Fairfield, Connecticut. Although Karen had little formal science education before high school, she learned on her feet, and has continued to do so through a career that includes scientific research expeditions, writing, and illustrating.
Karen has dived to the bottom of the Pacific Ocean in a tiny submarine, crunched through Arctic ice in an icebreaker, and visited labs, museum workshops, and research institutions across the U.S. in order to write and draw about science -- especially ocean science. She is the author of nearly 30 books for children, has illustrated several of these, and is the creator of Humanimal Doodles, a science comic for kids. Her fiction work includes the award-winning novel The Beetle and Me and the celebrated graphic novel Doodlebug.
Karen’s recent work includes Humanimal Doodle-style picture books for Harper Big Cat, such as Watching Whales, and Stuck in the Middle (Of Middle School), a sequel to Doodlebug. Right now she’s working on the photo shoot of a new National Geographic.
The children at Lions Academy are taught that they are exceptionally intelligent, extremely creative, and destined for greatness. And so they are. What happens when children are allowed to develop to their fulll intellectual capacity? They become the geniuses that they were born to be. Dr. Jean Swopes, Founder and Principal of Lions Academy, explains the reasons for the overwhelming success of her students, who, at preschool age, are demonstrating amazing gifts in music, science, and other disciplines. Staff members Angela Peet, Jacques Jackson and Jacqueline DeBerry discuss how their philosophy brings out the best in children. What are the teachers doing at Lions Academy that schools across the country need to learn from and imitate? How can we change attitudes of teachers that believe the students in their classrooms are destined to fail? How can we work around city administrations that refuse to provide the financial resources to uplift children in lower income commuities, and still produce excellence in our schools? In our second hour, recording artist David Banks, "Daiv On The Tracks" discusses the challenges that gifted young artists with spiritual consciousness must face. How do independent producers reach the masses of youth and override the heavily financed negative music with more positive, empowering messages?

Maggie Jackson, an award-winning author and former Boston Globe columnist is joining Young Media Critics on Tuesday, July 15, 2014 at 5 p.m.
Ms. Jackson is known for her penetrating coverage of social issues, especially technology’s impact on humanity. Her essays and articles also have appeared in The New York Times, Business Week, Utne, and on National Public Radio.
Her acclaimed book, Distracted: The Erosion of Attention and the Coming Dark Age, jumpstarted our global conversation on the steep costs of fragmenting our attention. With a foreword by Bill McKibben, the book reveals the astonishing scientific discoveries that can help us rekindle our powers of focus in a world of overload. The book is a “richly detailed and passionately argued … account of the travails facing an ADD society” (Publishers Weekly) and “concentrates the mind on a real problem of modern life” (Wall Street Journal).
We invite you - Tuesday, July 15, 2014, 5 p.m. Call in on 347-633-9114 and join the show.
I cannot accept the idea that God gave us a mind without the freedom and responsibility to use it. Organized religion has demonstrated through the ages that it is opposed to independent thought. The man-made and man-managed religions only allow the freedom to follow tradition. Even religious movements established upon the principles of religious freedom soon established rules to limit or completely destroy independent thought.
Religious tradition limits free expression of ideas. To receive the blessing of the church – and salvation itself – we must stay within the box. Thinking outside the box is prohibited. This religious box – centered on the church building – defines practically all of modern day Christianity. Spiritual growth is stifled in such an atmosphere.
Is there a way out?
