Changing the "Cradle to Prison" Pipeline to "Cradle to Career"

The National Council on Educating Black Children commends our President Barack Obama for developing a national initiative for Black and Latino Males; an elevated focus that is supported by our Board of Directors and our membership.
Far too long, too many young males of color have been sacrificed, by the wealthiest nation on the planet. In the words of Nelson Mandela, "You can judge the soul of a nation by the way it treats their children." The declaration to elevate this discussion to a national level is welcomed with exuberance.
NCEBC continues to address the areas research identifies as correlates with school failure. We collaborate with stakeholders, and maintain a growing partnership with faith-based institutions, school districts, and community centers, to establish Augustus F. Hawkins Literacy Centers. Currently there are 17 Literacy Centers operating in 6 states. NCEBC provides a challenging and culturally relevant curriculum for grades preK-6,that is in alignment with common core standards, and a strong focus on identity development. Pre and post reading assessments are given to students enrolled in our school-based centers, in addition all students receive three age-appropriate books a year, for their personal library. We encourage the incorporation of technology to under-grid instruction in our Literacy Centers.

FACTS: Approximately 12%-13% of the American population is African-American, but they make up 40% of the almost 2.1 million male inmates in jail or prison (U.S. Department of Justice, 2009). Census data for 2000 of the number and race of all individuals incarcerated in the United States revealed a wide racial disproportion of the incarcerated population in each state: the proportion of blacks in prison populations exceeded the proportion among state residents in twenty states; the percent of blacks incarcerated was five times greater than the resident population.
In an August 2013, Sentencing Project report on Racial Disparities in the United States Criminal Justice System, submitted to the United Nations, "one of every three black American males born today can expect to go to prison in his lifetime".

As more and more of the incarcerated become senior citizens in prison, the costs to house them rise as well, by approximately three times the expense of younger prisoners. Older prisoners are quickly becoming vulnerable and neglected, often faced with increased violence of fellow inmates, but there aren’t enough services addressing this unique situation, as well as the quandary of the ethical treatment of a fellow human being vs accountability for their crime.
The other side of the dilemma is when elderly inmates are released there are often few resources available, families have dispersed, and they are faced with more uncertainty about their welfare than when they were in prison.
Shattered Lives Radio listeners will hear both sides of the issue with guest Tina Maschi and Shattered Lives host and homicide survivor, Donna R. Gore.

THEME: A Candid Discussion about Religion behind Prison Walls: How does it Work and why does it Matter
Bruce Smith - Retired Car Salesman, Founder of the Christian Car Buying Ministry and a 15-year Member of a Volunteer Outreach Team.
THIS WEEK’S MESSAGE:
According to the Prison Fellowship Ministries, which describes itself as a family of Christian ministries dedicated to bringing peace to a broken world through works of grace, acts of justice, and words of truth…here are the numbers:
The United States has less than 5% of the world population, but almost 25% of the world’s prisoners;
Today, approximately 2.3 million inmates are behind bars;
95% of all prisoners are eventually release;
2 out of 3 will reoffend.
Prison Ministry is a larger concept, including the support of the spiritual and religious needs of prison guards and staff, whose work in an often demanding and brutal environment often creates a special need for pastoral care, similar to the care that is extended to the military, police officers and fire fighters. What is religion behind prison walls all about…how does it work…and why does it matter?
If we take a close examination at our youth and the troubles they find themselves in on the outside...disturbances in the schools, neighborhoods, and society...most likely we can trace the root cause of it in the homes they dwell in. Whether we would like to admit or not, rather than home being a place of love and peace for many of our youth it is a place of prison and war. It is time to truly and courageously deal with this harsh reality that takes place. Join us for another epsiode of Open Treasures as we sit down at the round table discussion concerning "When home is prison".

This present day nightmare is occuring right before our eyes! However, the Falsely Accused are NOT the only Victims. The Silent Sufferers are the MOTHERS and FAMILIES of these individuals. Human Rights for Prisoners March, hosted by Mary Neal - Call (347)857-3293 to speak on air. Today's guest is Brenda Anderson, a woman who spent her young years in Texas correctional facilities after protecting herself against three men who tried to rob her after watching her cash a check. Brenda was openly lesbian at the time and feels that her prosecution for self-defense was based on her gay lifestyle rather than on her shooting one of the men. She was also outspoken for human rights of prisoners as an inmate. Brenda's horrific torture as a U.S. inmate was recounted in an article in "Dog Justice for Mentally Ill" blog at http://dogjusticeformentallyill.blogspot.com/2014/10/aimi-vs-usa-b-anderson-claimant.html
Brenda Anderson is one of the claimants in "AIMI vs. USA", which will present up to 100 cases of discrimination, brutality and wrongful deaths against mentally ill Americans in International Court in 2015.
