Now we are on to part two!! Part one dealt with the classics that have always been the staple of Halloween for me, and this part now delves into the more modern additions to the list. Remember, these are my personal favorites so if you don't hear one of yours on the list, feel free to call in and let me know why you include it in your Halloween traditions. I have never been a fan of the super gory, bloody, and truly creepy Halloween tales. Films like Poltergeist, Sinister, and the like don't make this list because I get scared easily enough at this special time of year. Clowns are especially a no go!! (Thank you Stephen King for ruining that forever for me). Stay tuned, call in, and let's talk your Halloween favorites!!
Artist Andrea Dopaso was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Her mother, Norma Lado, is a well-known music composer, and her father a Doctor in Psychiatry. At age 15, she began studying with master Anselmo Piccoli, a well-established constructivism and geometric painter, who quickly became her mentor. She studied under Mr. Piccoli's tutelage for almost a decade; and he was the first to present her work to the art world. During the same period she received her master of Architecture and Urban design (1989) Universidad Nacional de Buenos Aires. Andrea moved to Los Angeles in 1990, where she resides today. It wasn't long before she expanded her career, working as a Designer and Concept Illustrator on such major motion pictures as American Beauty, The Life of Pi, Star Trek -the future begins- ,where she had the chance in a life time of creating the concepts illustrations for the interior of the new Enterprise, with production designer Scott Chambliss. Also in her resume : Angels & Demons, Spiderman 1, 2 and 3, Oz, Iron Man 3, Coraline and more. Hollywood gave her the opportunity to combine her love for painting and drawing with her love for architecture, and it provided the funding for her to create the incredible. Her work had been published in many books, The Art of Oz the Great and Powerful by Grant Curtis, The Making of Life of Pi, Angels & Demons, Star Trek to name but a few. Host Deardra Shuler talks with Emmy Award winning actor Keith David about his upcoming show THE CAPE premiering on Sunday, January 9th, on NBC at 9:00pm, 8:00 central. Keith who stars as Max Malini on "The Cape" is a New York born actor and Julliard alumni. He has appeared in Oliver Stone's Academy Award-winning "Platoon," Clint Eastwood's "Bird," and Paul Haggis' Academy Award-winning "Crash," as well as "There's Something About Mary," "Armageddon," "Pitch Black; The Chronicles of Riddick," "Mr. and Mrs. Smith", "Coraline", The Princess and the Frog", "Barbershop and "Death at a Funeral." Mr David has received multiple Emmy Awards for his narration of two Ken Burns documentaries: "The War" and "Unforgivable Blackness", and was nominated for his narration of "Jazz". He has also received a daytime Emmy nomination for his work in Showtime's "The Tiger Wood's Story" and a Tony Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor in a Musical for his role in the Broadway play "Jelly's Last Jam. Deardra will also talk with the New York subway hero Wesley Autry, a former construction worker and Navy veteran who in 2007 achieved international recognition after he saved Cameron Hollopeter, a 20-year-old film student who had suffered a seizure and fallen onto the tracks, from being struck by a New York City subway train by throwing himself on top of Hollopeter as the train passed over them during the second half of the show.
Kim McCool interviews Althea Crome, contributing artist to the "Coraline" film. Althea has a unique talent - she designs and knits her creations in 1:12 scale, or as she calls it "bug knit scale". Now that's TINY!!
Her work is at the Cheongju International Craft Biennale taking place in Korea from September until November.
She is included in several books: the upcoming Ripleys Believe it or not published by Scholastic in 2010 and was in last years Ripleys Believe it or Not book called "Prepare to Be Shocked." Althea's work is also included in "The Culture of Knitting" by Joanne Turney-- which was released in October 2009; "Merge" which is being put out by Basheer Graphc Books (release date not set yet). Althea has also appeared on numerous radio and television shows: Martha Stewart Show, "The Yarn Show", March 23, 2009 and Knitty Gritty Knitsters on the DIY network in July, 2008, to name a few.
The summer movie season is here and whether it's Tony Stark's armor or Freddy Krueger's fingers this show is all about METAL!!!
IRON MAN 2 is bound to be a huge hit. This sequel to the 2008 film brings Robert Downey Jr. back as the hero. In addition to Gwyneth Paltrow and Don Cheadle (replacing Terrence Howard), Tony Stark must also contend with Scarlett Johnansen, Sam Rockwell and Mickey Rourke. Marvel Comics produced this one, which is almost always a good sign.
A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET is the remake of Wes Craven's 1984 horror classic. Jackie Earle Haley (WATCHMEN, SHUTTER ISLAND) plays Freddy Krueger this time out in a remake that is more like the gritty original than the humorous sequels.
FURRY VENGEANCE is not an internet fetish site, but a new family comedy starring Brendan Fraser. When a real estate developer is about to knock down a nature preserve, the animals of the forest strike back. Hilarity ensues, we hope.
THE LOSERS is another comic adaptation, this one a tongue-in-cheek action title from a few years back. A special forces crew is believed dead after a double-cross. They return to the United States in a bid to take out the man who set them up.
Finally, THE SECRET OF KELLS is a critically-acclaimed animated film which is only now hitting the United States. It was nominated for a Best Animated Film Oscar, alongside such films as UP and CORALINE.
