The Cake Therapist with Award-Winning Cookbook Author Judith Fertig

    in Moms and Family

Claire “Neely” O’Neil is a pastry chef of extraordinary talent. Every great chef can taste shimmering, elusive flavors that most of us miss, but Neely can “taste” feelings—cinnamon makes you remember; plum is pleased with itself; orange is a wake-up call. When flavor and feeling give Neely a glimpse of someone’s inner self, she can customize her creations to help that person celebrate love, overcome fear, even mourn a devastating loss.

Judith Fertig is an award-winning cookbook author whose food and lifestyle writing has appeared in more than a dozen publications, including Bon Appétit, Saveur, and the New York Times. Judith attended École de Cuisine La Varenne in Paris and the Graduate Summer Workshop at the University of Iowa Writers’ Workshop. She teaches cooking classes across the country and lives in Kansas City.

Join Judith Fertig and me on Tuesday, August 11, 10-11 A.M. CT US. We will be discussing her latest novel, The Cake Therapist.

And because this is Marilyn’s cookbook, it will be a showcase of her community involvement and is aptly titled Eat This Community. We’ll get all the details about the new cookbook and when it will be available. She has not looked back since first stepping behind the line in 1982 to cover for her brother and head chef at Oshin, spending the last 30 years developing her culinary style through travel, self-instruction, and an unwavering passion for gastronomy. In 2014, she was named one of NJ’s 2014 Best 50 Women in Business by NJBIZ, NJ’s premiere business news publication. Marilyn was also named one of NJ’s Top 25 Leading Women Entrepreneurs of 2014, as announced by the Leading Women Entrepreneurs and Business Owners (LWE) Initiative. in Books

The beloved New York Times bestselling culinary mystery writer delivers a cookbook packed with more than 160 mouthwatering recipes and charming anecdotes about her writing and cooking life.

Diane Mott Davidson is the author of seventeen bestselling mysteries featuring caterer/sleuth Goldy Schulz, a woman who “took the lemon that life had given her and made not just lemonade but Lemon Chicken, Lemon Bars, Lemon Cookies and Lemon Meringue Pie.” Each Goldy novel includes recipes for scrumptious dishes from the adored character’s kitchen. Now, Davidson has collected these treasured recipes and some brand-new dishes in one volume for the first time.  Here are recipes for Appetizers and Soups, Eggs and Cheese, Salads and Starches, Meat, Poultry, and Fish, Breads, Desserts, and finally Low-Carb Recipes (how Davidson lost thirty pounds and kept them off). Most of the dishes came from “playing around with dishes tasted in restaurants.” Others are family favorites, some came from friends, and a few are “happy accidents.”

Part memoir, part writing manual, part cookbook, Goldy’s Kitchen Cookbook combines the author’s gift for storytelling with her skills in the kitchen. She introduces the recipes with stories about how she came to create them, anecdotes from her experiences as a writer and home cook, and includes her joy at receiving a fan letter from the legendary French Chef herself, Julia Child.

Table Talk: Cooking Up a Cookbook

    in Caregiving

We're creating a CareGiving cookbook which we'll sell to raise money for our CareGifters program. Through our CareGifters program, we send $500 to a family caregiver in need as often as we can.

Two members of CareGiving.com cooked up the idea for our cookbook: Mar, who cares for her husband, and Lillie, who cares for her mom. Mar and Lillie will share more about the cookbook as well as their caregiving experiences during today's show.

    About Lillie:

Lillie is single, 56 years old and sole caregiver to my 88 year old for her mom, who is a victim of several strokes. She two children, two stepchildren and three grandsons. She's been caring for her mom for the past 17 years. She also cared for her dad and helped care for her paternal grandmother and a lifelong neighbor.

    About Mar:

Mar joined caregiving.com in February 2015. She was a long-distance caregiver for her mother, whom she lost one year ago. She and her husband also lost both of his parents in 2014. In between those losses, her husband Tom received a diagnosis of a degenerative and progressive disease which places her as an expectant and freshman caregiver in The Six Stages of Caregiving. The expected timetable for his illness is two to 10 years, with eight years the average. She came to caregiving.com with the intent to add to her support system and to begin to build a set of resources to assist her moving forward. She has jumped in with blogging, chats, and enjoys the webinars, podcasts, and forums as well. She is extremely thankful to have found the encouragement and support and positive atmosphere of caregiving.com.
