Church membership, Biblical Misuse, and the Invention of the Palestinians

    in Christianity

In today's broadcast, Dr. Randy White answers three question:

Why do churches have sermons and series on such soft, non-Biblical topics, like “How to Succeed in this New Year?” What should I do if I am part of a church like this?
Where in Scripture is church membership prescribed and does Christ's teaching on church discipline carry over into the church age?
How do we know if we are mis-using a Bible verse by taking it out of context—such as we often do with Jeremiah 29:11? Can we not still draw application and comfort from such verses? Is it legitimate to have a “verse of the day”?
Was Israel renamed Palestine in the 20th century or in Biblical times? Did the Romans do this?

Author Spotlight with Author of Til Death Do Us Part Nicole Milner

    in Books

The Beautiful Butterfly Show Welcomes Author of " Til Death Do Us Part" Nicole Milner.

Nicole Milner Milner is a native of Richmond, Virginia and is a proud graduate of Hampton University and published her first book,Til Death Do Us Part, in 2012. She says it's actually funny hearing her name and the word “author” in the same sentence and context. She may have written two or three poems when she was a love struck teenager and a few research papers for school, but that’s about it. Milner never had any desire to be a writer or to produce a play for that matter. By profession she’s human resources, not writer, not producer. Well, at least not until now!

Publishing her first book and now anticipating the play based on the book has been both an exciting and humbling experience. Some reader comments have included “I wanted to tell you great book. It was very inspirational and I have encouraged others to read it. You are truly a blessing and you have touched my heart;" “I cried when I read your book because it felt like you were telling my story;” and “Your book has the makings of a movie. Although Milner’s books are fiction, she crafts her story lines based on some actual events which makes the story more relatable to the reader.

CAN A CHURCH GIVE OUT CONDOMS?

    in Religion

How should the church or Christians do outreach? Is the goal to "show LOVE" or show Christ? Are those terms mutually exclusive? Is the goal to be relatable, cutting edge or relevant or a witness to those who are lost? What is the purpose condemnation or a ministry of reconciliation? What if the person doesn't smoke cigarettes but instead is addicted to marijuana, cocaine or meth; do you give them a nickel bag instead of Newports? What if the person doesn't need condoms but is addicted to going to the strip club, do you give them a stack of $1 Bills? WHERE DO YOU DRAW THE LINE? In this show we discuss the biblical precedence that Jesus set with outreach ministry when dealing with those who he encountered in the streets. God is not going to "tell us to do something" that is opposite than HIS WORD. TUNE IN and call in on Tuesday Feb. 9th at 12 PM EST. for Break Bread Online bible study, where unlike Sway the bible does "have the answers", we just need to read it in context to find truth.

Good Cop Bad Cop on Yesterday's Problems, Today's Issues, and Tomorrow's Future

    in Current Events

Hosted by Michael Hampton and Gabriel Rich

The control of minorities in the new America  influenced early policing. New England settlers appointed Indian Officers to police Native Americans, the St. Louis police were founded to protect residents from Native Americans in that frontier city, and many southern police departments began as slave patrols. Today, as we examine police slogans like, “To Protect and to Serve” and “Committed to Excellence”, in a historical context, it becomes obvious that they’re not directed at the policed neighborhoods. We find police officers in the neighborhood of indigenous Americans and other working class races in the news every day. They Kill first and hide the facts later. They are murdering unarmed men and defenseless women and children and it is plain to see, in plain sight, they are abusing their positions of power. Through the media, the crimes are covered up and Politicians turn their heads as the innocent die every day while made up stories justify their “legalized” violence.

    Black Geek Movie Talk: Regression

    in Movies

This week we review "Regression" starring Ethan Hawke, Emma Watson, and David Thewlis.  Within the context of 80's hysteria over satanic cults, a detective (Hawke) and psychiatrist (Thewlis) investigate the rape of a young woman (Watson) in the Midwest.   "Regression" was directed by Spanish filmmaker Alejandro Amenábar whose 2001 flick "The Others" was probably underrated by most critics and movie-goers.  Amenábar is also responsible for "Abre Los Ojos", the trippy, existential screenplay Cameron Crowe adapted into "Vanilla Sky".  Tune in today at 1:30 PM PST to find out if this is a must-see or must-skip.
