We all have negative feelings. What do you do with yours? Chances are, when it comes to the small losses, irritations, upsets, and annoyances that the vast majority of us suffer daily and weekly, year in and year out, we say, “It could be worse” or “At least I’ve got my health.” In this effort to look on the bright side, we succeed in cutting ourselves off from the understanding and support we need most.
Our guest in the Coach Cafe this week, Tina Gilbertson, self-esteem expert and author of Constructive Wallowing: How to Beat Bad Feelings by Letting Yourself Have Them, teaches us that by learning to accept and embrace, rather than suppress, difficult feelings, people can keep their sense of personal power and, better yet, gain greater understanding and ultimately esteem for themselves. Feeling bad can actually lead to feeling better, faster! Join us to find out how!
Tina Gilbertson holds a master’s degree in Counseling Psychology and is a licensed mental health counselor. In addition to working with adults one-on-one, she teaches assertiveness and self-esteem workshops and classes on goal-setting, decision-making, overcoming anxiety and finding the right career. She has written feature articles on emotional intelligence and health for Portland’s Natural Awakenings magazine, and contributes wisdom as a self-esteem expert for online therapist directory GoodTherapy.org. She lives in Portland, Oregon, and can be found online at TinaGilbertson.com.
All people benefit from an awareness of flaws, willingness to change, and growth in positive directions. It's important to be able to hear the positive advice within constructive criticism to find this awareness and power to change. There are many approaches to giving constructive criticism, such as tough love, positive reinforcement, shock statements, and motivational talk.
What approaches are the most beneficial? Does it vary based on the person or situation? Some people may need to be slapped in the face information-wise while others may need a softer touch. A possible downside of a harsher approach may be that people can't hear the positive side because they get offended. Thus, once they hear something critical, they may stop listening! And the very thing that could help them is what they detest and reject defensively.
Regardless of the approach, how can people better receive constructive criticism? What can you do to listen for the deeper meaning and identify the positive advice that you can apply to your own life? How can we be more open to having our flaws exposed by others without getting defensive? And do we need both approaches?

“Constructive wallowing” seems like an oxymoron. Constructive is a good thing, but wallowing is bad. Right?
But wait a minute; is it really so terrible to give ourselves a time-out to feel our feelings? Or is it possible that wallowing is an act of loving kindness, right when we need it most?
Almost everyone loves the idea of self-compassion — the notion that maybe in spite of our messy emotions and questionable behavior, we really aren’t all that bad. In recent years there’s been an explosion of books that encourage readers to stop beating themselves up for being human, which is terrific. Unfortunately, readers who aren’t interested in Buddhism or meditation have been left out in the cold.
Constructive Wallowing is the first book to cut right to the chase, bypassing descriptions of Eastern philosophy and meditation techniques to teach readers how to accept and feel their feelings with self-compassion for greater emotional health.
It’s tempting to turn away from menacing, uncomfortable feelings like anger, grief, or regret; however, ignoring them just seems to make them stick around. By learning to accept and embrace, difficult feelings, readers keep their sense of personal power and gain greater understanding and ultimately esteem for themselves.
The Reasons to Believe #40
Our Reasons to Believe Scripture passage for today is Matthew 28:18-20. It reads, "And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen."
Our Reasons to Believe quote for today is from William Lane Craig. He said, "If Christians could be trained to to provide solid evidence for what they believe and good answers to unbelievers’ questions and objections, then the perception of Christians would slowly change. Christians would be seen as thoughtful people to be taken seriously rather than as emotional fanatics or buffoons. The gospel would be a real alternative for people to embrace."
Our Reason to Believe powerpoint today is titled "Twenty Arguments for the Existence of God" from "The Handbook of Christian Apologetics" by Peter Kreeft and Ronald K. Tacelli:
Throughout this next set of broadcasts, you will find arguments of many different kinds for the existence of God. And we make to you, an initial appeal. We realize that many people, both believers and nonbelievers, doubt that God's existence can be demonstrated or even argued about. You may be one of them. You may in fact have a fairly settled view that it cannot be argued about. But no one can reasonably doubt that attention to these arguments has its place in any work on apologetics. For very many have believed that such arguments are possible, and that some of them actually work.
DEMOCRACY VERSUS JUSTICE? using words to reveal truth in order to produce justice and correctness in all areas of people activity in society including economics, education, entertainment, labor, law, politics, religion, sex and war.The matter sometimes referred to as the 'race problem' is the basic initial 'unfinished business' among people of the known universe.
To eliminate any major problem among people we must first eliminate the problem of functional racism which is white supremacy (not all white people ), only the white men, women and children who practice and promote mistreating all black and nonwhite people because of greed and this thing called 'Race'-a political strategy. Justice will be a better system than what we have. Justice meaning no one is mistreated Black people or White people and who needs help the most receives the most constructive help in all areas of people activity in society.
According to definition the system we are living in is not a Democracy as we are taught. There are no uniform rights and treatment, it includes ageism, classism, sexism, racism and so on. If anything we are living in a global unjust system. Justice will be a better system than what we have.
Portage, MI – Teenage rebellion is a process of individuation; to form their own opinions and beliefs and assert their individuality, adolescents must separate their identity from you as their child. Though this process can be aggravating to parents, it is normal.
Sometimes, however, an adolescent’s volatile emotional needs begin to dominate the home and control the moods of everyone in it. What began as the vision of a perfect family soon devolves into arguments and chaos.
“Families love each other – that’s a given – but they don’t always know how to express it or give each other what they need emotionally,” says family counselor Theresa Britton.
Britton is a licensed master social worker and the founder of Family Matters Counseling, specializing in providing counseling services to couples, adolescents, children and adults. Britton is trained in brief strategic family therapy, which helps families with adolescents face problems related to truancy, poor school performance and defiant behavior.
“Each family is an individual family with its own structure and patterns of communication, so you need to have a variety of skillsets and tools to help that family best,” says Britton. “My goal is to look at their interactions, how they function and communicate, and devise strategies to help them overcome those obstacles.”
According to Britton, families tend to argue about their story with each other. In a family systems approach, everyone feels heard and everyone’s story is accepted.
“Everyone has their own perspective but there’s a little truth to them all,” explains Britton. “I have it organized so that all the family members participate. We talk about past hurts and you would be surprised how honest kids are; even defiant teens will be brutally honest about why they’re misbehaving."
Beginning of a series of podcasts. Introducing formal logic at a practical level. Discussion of the structure of formal arguments, their parts, and the different ways an argument can be flawed (invalid, unsound, coherence issues)
Also hoping to fit in some discussion of future direction for this podcast and wider venture

Shall TWO OPPOSING neither of which are PERFECT ALLEGIANCES, neither of which will REASON with ONE ANOTHER can AGREE, be counted HOLY COVENANT with YAH true to the GOSPEL of PEACE?
45,000 DENOMINATIONS across some 280+ NATIONS. The bible prophesied that after the murderous times that was the Great Tribulation of 70-365AD there would come a rise of FALSE prophets, a rise of FALSE testimony. A rise of MISrepresentations and MISrepresentatives that they who thus believe to trust these pretenses would be damned. (Mat.24, 2Thess.2) Because NOTHING has come since to fully restore ORDER, this PRETENSE continues unabated ill Messiah Himself as SHILOH comes as the One True Anointed King .. to expose this devil's illvision. YAH is NOT the author of this confusion. HE warned. Yet these words are only for the most humbly diligently and faithful soul. (1Corinthians 3:18-4:5)
We live in a WORLD wherein ALL have SINNED and FALLEN SHORT of the GLORY of YAH! Therefore ALL the PRESENT CONTENTIONS of MANKIND are due to the FACT that HUMANITY is DECEIVED, FIGHTING for CAUSES wherein there is NO VICTORY in that NONE of this WARFARE will result in the COMPLETE SALVATION of even ONE HUMAN SOUL! (1Corinthians 1:10-11, 3:13-<18-4:5) ALL the ARGUMENTS and CONTENTIONS of MANKIND are due to the FACT that in their CARNAL MINDEDNESS men have been DECEIVED! MEN have given their ALLEGIANCES to FIGHT for CAUSES which in the END could never bring forth a RIGHTEOUS PEACE acceptable unto YAH! Indeed! If any man think himself WISE after any of these contentious causes of the WORLDLY, NONE of which will be able to STAND before the SON OF MAN; let that man consider himself a FOOL that he may become WISE!
