    in Travel

This week Travel Today with Peter Greenberg comes from Cunard’s flagship, the R.M.S. Queen Mary 2, or QM2. This is a Transatlantic ocean liner, and the only liner in service between South Hampton and New York. Equal in height to a 23-story building and nearly four football fields in length, QM2 is unmatched in her class and is the last such liner to be built since 1969. But don’t let her size fool you. A Transatlantic crossing is a luxurious experience for reasons that go beyond the obvious.

    in Spirituality

Kristyn Decker was born and raised in polygamy. She was the 12th of her father’s and prophet’s 23 biological children. Her mother was the first of his 13 wives. While living polygamy and raising her seven children to believe the same, Decker taught off and on for 18 years in the Apostolic United Brethren’s private school. In 1991, with five of her 7 kids still at home, she volunteered in her youngest son’s Head Start class and began taking college courses. She was an assistant Head Start teacher for four years, while acquiring her AS degree, and then became a lead teacher for four more years. During and after this time Decker attended and sponsored in self-help groups, volunteered with Utah State School Age Child Care Association, and joined the Utah Children Association. In 1995 she began teaching CDA classes to Child Development Associate candidates at Children First and presented at Early Childhood conferences. Right after that, Kristyn wrote her own business plan and received a half million dollar SBA loan to start a kid’s college. She graduated in 2002 with a BA in Elementary Education and Early Childhood from Southern Utah University, and began teaching K – 2 in public schools.

After Decker published her first book Fifty Years in Polygamy – Big Secrets and Little White Lies, she founded the Sound Choices Coalition, to inform society about the realities of polygamy and to advocate for its victims. While Decker’s second book; UNCENSORED FYIP has recently been published, she continues to speak, assist and coach victims, and work with other non-profit organizations who take a proactive approach to promote societies that are just and stable.    http://fiftyyearsinpolygamy.com/

    Ohio's Cedar Point & Perry's Victory Memorial

    in Travel

On today's World Footprints radio show we will take flight across America with pilot Field Morey as he prepares for his Capital Air Tour.  Field and fellow pilot Conrad Teitell are embarking on an adventurous flight in a small aircraft to all the state capitals in the United States lower 48 plus Alaska in only two weeks.  The pilots plan to raise awareness about the importance of smaller airports to the tourism industry and to provide a virtual geography lesson to school children across America.

We will also enjoy some time in middle America; namely Ohio, as we enjoy a walk through the roller coaster capital of the world--Cedar Point.  This Sandusky landmark is a place that holds special memories for us because every childhood summer was spent daring ourselves to ride the latest roller coaster.  This visit was no different because the Park's Bryan Edwards led us to an old favorite--The Blue Streak; and we enjoyed soaring through the air on the newest giant--The Gatekeeper.  Enjoy exploring the "best amusement park in the world" with us.

Finally, one of the decisive battles in the War of 1812 took place in Lake Erie's Put-In-Bay where Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry captured the British squadron and raised the now famous "Don't Give Up The Ship" flag on board the US Brig Niagara.  National Park Ranger Marianne Duvendack takes us on a tour around the International Peace Monument and shares more about Ohio's role in the War of 1812.

    Interview with Olivia Frances

    in Music

OLIVIA FRANCES is an old soul wrapped inside the effervescent free spirit of an 18-year-old girl. This talented singer-songwriter originally from Cincinnati, OH and now based in Nashville began her musical journey at a young age – her first performance was a duet with a friend during an elementary school talent show. Her pursuit of the spotlight was set in motion in 7th Grade when Olivia had her first solo at the school’s Winter Concert. It was a moment that remains vividly in her mind; as she stepped up to the microphone, away from the choir and sang her first solo, Olivia knew in that instant that being on stage was where she belonged.

She started studying music in earnest after that; with piano at age six and by the time she was 12, her love of guitar and songwriting came to the forefront. Olivia continues to hone her musical talents and took the step of moving to Nashville on her own after graduating high school. After joining the prestigious Nashville Songwriters Association International (NSAI) at age 12, her move to Nashville enabled Olivia to become more active and attend more NSAI events. Her days are spent perfecting her music, while at the same time learning as much as she can about the music business as an intern with a record label. The valuable experience and connections she makes have allowed Olivia to play at such well-respected venues as The Commodore Grille and The Bluebird.

All in all, this is only the beginning for the vivacious young girl who grew up in Cincinnati with no musical influence in her family. Olivia’s mother is a writer and her father runs their family business. Their love and support have shaped Olivia into the hard working, always curious young woman she is today. Olivia is planning an exciting new project in 2015 and continues to pursue her dreams while writing and making music in the Music City.
