Kings Park, NY – While much of our perception of hypnosis is associated with stage hypnosis – participants clucking like chickens in front of a live audience – hypnosis has been proven to have many valuable therapeutic uses.
Alesia Simco is a licensed mental health counselor and certified hypnotherapist. A long-time sufferer of migraines and a habitual smoker, Simco didn’t really believe in hypnosis herself until it worked on her.
“The tools I’d learned to help other people I used on myself,” says Simco. “I want to dispel the myths about hypnosis so more people can experience its wonderful benefits.”
Hypnosis begins by guiding a person toward a physiological state in which they are completely relaxed and their breathing is slow and rhythmic. At this point, the subject’s conscious mind is less active and suggestions can be delivered to the subconscious mind. When you wake from hypnosis, you implement the suggestions.
“Hypnosis is not sleep,” explains Simco. “You’re merely in a relaxed state of mind. You’re not going to surrender your will or reveal your secrets. The hypnotherapist is merely a facilitator. After hypnosis, it’s still the subject’s responsibility to change their behavior.”
Certification as a hypnotherapist requires a background in mental health. “Therapy” implies treatment and hypnosis is not a treatment. It’s simply a tool professionals can use to enhance the therapeutic process. Simco believes she’s helping to bring credibility to this tool.
“The reason I’ve been successful is because I will turn people away,” says Simco. “My colleagues think I’m crazy, but I’m in this field to help people. I don’t need more people thinking hypnosis isn’t real.”

Belinda is the mother of two grown children, loves to “workout”, bicycle, rollerblade, snow ski, and just be healthy and have fun.”

In 2009 she created and implemented the first American Diabetes Association’s Youth Leader Program and oversaw all youth and family programs across New England for three years.
She received her Master’s in Social Work from Washington University in St. Louis in 2009 and a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and Child and Family Studies from Syracuse University. She is also a Certified Product Trainer with Medtronic Diabetes and serves as a volunteer mentor with AYUDA (American Youth Understanding Diabetes Abroad) where she has traveled to both Belize and Bermuda assisting in the creation of diabetes camps and programs.

Dr. William Davis is my guest this week and will highlight the AMTA Archives.
Dr. Davis is currently Director of the graduate program in music therapy at Colorado State University and Chair and Director of Graduate Studies in Music for the Department. He joined the CSU faculty in 1984 after completing a doctorate in music therapy with a performance minor in clarinet from the University of Kansas. His clinical background and area of clinical expertise is with adults and children who have intellectual disabilities. He has been active for many years in the American Music Therapy Association serving on the AMTA Board of Directors as historian; in 1998 he founded the AMTA Archives at CSU and continues in the capacity of Archivist. Dr. Davis has also served as an Editorial Committee member for the Journal of Music Therapy, an Assembly of Delegates representative, and as a member of the Government Relations Committee. He is co-author of an introductory level music therapy text in its third printing and is used by many music therapy programs in the United States and abroad. Previous editions of the book have been translated into Spanish, Korean and Japanese. His research interest is in the history of music therapy with numerous articles appearing in the Journal of Music Therapy, Music Therapy Perspectives and the British Journal of Music Therapy.
