    The Effectiveness of Empathy

    in Health

What is empathy? Why is it important in the lives of athletes, coaches and parents?

As an adult, have you ever:
    -critiqued kid's playing/running/jumping/passing?
-spoke at the athlete(s) without first asking them a question?
-offered advice without being asked for it?
-gave your perspective of the game before asking or hearing theirs?

    Be honest!

How we talk with kids is a MAJOR issue in youth athletics and why MOST KIDS QUIT! 200,000 youth soccer players were surveyed as to why they didn't join the current season and their #1 answer was it was 'no fun'! #2: coach, #3: parent. Apprently the adults in their lives aren't making the experience enjoyable any longer.

How can we support athletes without pushing them past the breaking point? Why is this pressure necessary?
What else can we say that helps them learn but isn't harsh criticism?
How can we as adults come from a place of empathy? What is empathy? How do we use this powerful tool? Listen in!

The Sacred Process of Inner Work

    in Spirituality

Sacred inner work addresses a strong yearning that many of us have to awaken to a new level of consciously knowing ourselves. It can support us in raising our consciousness beyond our ordinary way of being in life and gain access to the more mysterious and awesome way of knowing ourselves, along with a sense of sacred purpose. Jaquelyn Small, LMSW, joins us to offer some insight as to how we can actually do this transformational inner work.  She has authored 10 books on personal transformation that include “Sacred Purpose of Being Human,” “Tranformers-The Therapists of the Future,” “Awakening in Time,” and the best-selling book for counseling-from-the-heart, “Becoming Naturally Therapeutic.” She holds degrees in human psychology, clinical social work and Applied Music, is the creator of Eupsychia, a non-profit educational institute that offers certification in Psychospiritual Integration and Integrative Breathwork, and has trained health professionals in the emerging field of spiriitual psychology. Her body of work centers upon integrating psychological concerns while awakening spirituality.

Treating depression and anxiety--can we get past the trial and error approach

    in Health

    Speakers:

Patrick J. McGrath, M.D. Professor of Clinical Psychiatry

Sarah Fader, Founder & CEO, Stigma Fighters

Despite years of progress, the stigma of having a mood disorder like depression, or an anxiety disorder like panic disorder is still considerable.  People experience disbelief from family, co-workers, and friends that this is a medical problem rather than a matter of needing to exert willpower and fortitude.  Sarah Fader and her organization, Stigma Fighters are working hard to address this issue for people with these disorders and will discuss her advocacy work in this regard.  Even when a mood or anxiety disorder has been diagnosed and is being treated, unfortunately selection of the correct treatment is still a matter of trial and error, with the attendant delay and frustration.  Dr. Patrick McGrath is engaged in a pioneering study, funded by the National Institute of Mental Health, called EMBARC, which seeks to make the first steps toward a future where testing will help predict which treatment will be most effective.  Ms. Fader and Dr. McGrath will discuss these efforts to assist those having these disorders."
