'Twenty Feet From Stardom' puts backup singers center stage"
By Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times Film Critic
Their voices are powerful enough to tear you apart and put you back together again, and their stories will do the same. But when you call them backup singers, you better smile. That's because the performers in the infectious and irresistible "Twenty Feet From Stardom" are willing and able to outsing any solo act in sight and are not shy about letting you know it. "There is a power to what it is we do, but no one has acknowledged it," says singer Janice Pendarvis. No one until now.
Veteran director Morgan Neville ("Troubadours") took the idea offered by the late Gil Friesen, longtime president of A&M Records, and has made a moving and joyous behind-the-scenes documentary about a world filled with big, bold personalities and the music they make. These women sing in a way that is transformative for us, and, it turns out, for them as well.

For the last show of 2010, we have an amazing gift to mark the holiday season. On the virtual couch we have the eclectic superstar Janice Pendarvis who is know for creating musical magic as a world-class performer known for her ability to sing R&B, pop, jazz, reggae, rock and avant-garde music. She has staged the stage with legendary artists from Sting, Roberta Flack, Laurie Anderson, Peter Tosh, Philip Glass, The Rolling Stones, Najee, Ben E. King, Brandy, Aaron Neville, Barry White, The O’Jay’s and Jimmy Cliff. Janice grew up in Queens, New York. Her mother was enamored with different forms of classical music so at an early age Janice fell in love with Coltrane, Miles, Bach and Beethoven. The sudden realization that she was the only kid in the neighborhood who sang Trane’s solos made her get into more popular forms of music. Her professional career as an entertainer began as a songwriter. Producers and artists loved her song demos and kept asking a very shy and reluctant Janice Pendarvis to sing. Roberta Flack was persistent in encouraging Janice to sing. The first background vocal session Janice ever did was for Roberta. Imagine singing with Patti Austin, Deniece Williams, Roberta Flack and Lani Groves on your first session (with Stevie Wonder hanging out in the control room)! Luiz Bonfa, one of the founders of bossa nova who wrote the haunting “Manhã de Carnaval” for the film Black Orpheus, wrote some songs with Janice and insisted that she sing on the music he was recording at that time.
