Research Methods in Criminal Justice – Theory and Philosophy

    in Training

Brought to you by The American Public Safety Training Institute (TAPSTI) www.tapsti.org, this 2 hour session will review the work of Dr. Peter Kraska and Dr. W. Lawrence Neuman in their excellent textbook entitled “Criminal Justice and Criminology Research Methods” (2012, 2nd ed.).  This first seminar helps answer some basic questions about knowledge, how it is constructed and what it has to do with criminal justice studies. We have questions we ask every day, departments across the country need research done, but who is to say what research needs to be done and how it is to be done to satisfy the needs of that Chief, Warden, Regional Administrator, or other agency manager who needs to make serious and accurate decisions based on your work? This seminar introduces the concepts of epistemology, positivist social science, interpretive social science, and critical social science. Then we go into the parts of a theory and variables in research before expanding to the development of a theory.  The latter half of the seminar reviews Grounded Theory, Temporal Order, Association, Types of Variables, etc. and then we finish up with Hypothesis and errors in reasoning.

Black Slavery Emancipation Research in Northern States - James W. Petty

    in History

Join Genealogist Jim W. Petty for a discussion of his research on Black Slavery Emancipation Research in the Northern States and learn about the four categories of records that provide genealogical data on enslaved people in Northern states before the Civil War.

Beginning in 2010, Jim became interested in African American Genealogy Studies upon following client genealogy into the Slave culture of Rhode Island.  Upon learning about the concept of Slavery in all States in America, and the eventual “gradual emancipation” of Black Slaves in each of the Northern States, he realized that a product of the emancipation movement was the creation of Slave birth records from as early as 1777, and continuing until national emancipation in 1865.  These records led to the keeping of other records relating to African Americans in the Northern States, which will hopefully become a resource for researchers throughout the United States.

Currently Jim has been collecting and abstracting Slave Birth Records for the State of New Jersey from 1804 to 1865, with the goal of publishing his findings during the 2015-2016 sesquicentennial of Slave Emancipation in the U.S. (1865-1866).

Jim has a degree in Genealogy Technology from Brigham Young University, and has been certified as a Genealogist and a Genealogy Records Searcher by the Board for the Certification of Genealogists (1984-2015), and accredited by the International Commission for the Accreditation of Genealogists (1972-2015).

Is Paranormal Research Dead? An Open & Honest Discussion

    in Paranormal

    Friday, November 6th    10pm ET / 9pm CT / 7pm PT

Has the media and those "starry eyed" paranormal posers taken advantage of the paranormal and made it into a mockery for all those who truly want to continue true paranormal research? Have we become numb to the idea that just because our story gets on a paranormal show that we neglect what we originally set out for?

I know we are not alone out there in thinking that paranormal research has if not slowed down, completely stopped for fame and money. Many have succumbed to putting on "demonic" or "scary" stories in the public that represents the paranormal and have pocketed lots of money in return for selling out the field we all treasure. Even conferences have become a big "paranormal flea market" for those just wanting to sell their own products and regurgitate the same old case files and "research" year after year with the same people they call "experts".

Well, tonight we will discuss all this and more to get the truth out there and share our opinions including yours. Please call the show any time to discuss your thoughts. The caller line is (661) 244-9831. You can skype thru as well for free!
