Whether from the patient's or from the practitioner's perspective, chronic illness is usually seen as devastating to the individual who suffers, challenging for the practitioner who treats the patient, and is usually framed as a drain on the health system in general. This episode of "Healing Circles: Sisters on Call" looks at chronic illness as a healing experience and teaches both the patient and the practitioner how to remain conscious, curious and connected to their healing as a means of engaging the issues around chronic illness.

Many diseases adversely affect our brain health later in life such as Alzheimer's, dementia and Parkinsons. Perhaps we can help by maintaining good oxygen levels and doing activites which activate our brain daily, like computer games, sports, meditation, conversations, team board games, reading, writing, exercises. Dr. David Barczyk, D.C. addresses 5 activities which may help save you and loved ones from future brain diseases which are aggravated by inactivity.
1. Meditate: Meditation has been shown to increase IQ and decrease stress. Meditate 10 minutes a day. No excuses. (If you’ve never meditated before and are too afraid at this point to ask how to do it, the answer is simple to give, but difficult to do. To meditate means to clear your brain. Basically, think about nothing. If you’ve never tried it, you may be surprised at what a challenge such a simple seeming task can be. Stay in the struggle and do it. One tip is to little envision chasing your thoughts away to leave your brain clear.)
2. Listen to music or better yet learn to play music.
3. Exercise: Walk. Bike. Swim. Exercise increases oxygen. Your brain loves oxygen.
4. Change your environment: Look for ways to struggle. Take a different route to work. If you usually go left, go right. Do something different. Change your routine.
5. Think positive

Fibromyalgia is a disorder that causes muscle pain and fatigue (feeling tired). People with fibromyalgia have “tender points” on the body. Tender points are specific places on the neck, shoulders, back, hips, arms, and legs. These points hurt when pressure is put on them.
People with fibromyalgia may also have other symptoms, such as:
Painful menstrual periods
Tingling or numbness in hands and feet
Problems with thinking and memory (sometimes called “fibro fog”).
A person may have two or more coexisting chronic pain conditions. Such conditions can include chronic fatigue syndrome, endometriosis, fibromyalgia, inflammatory bowel disease, interstitial cystitis, temporomandibular joint dysfunction, and vulvodynia. It is not known whether these disorders share a common cause.

This week Sam Coffman discusses some of the most common chronic illnesses in America and how he would deal with them using herbs if he were in a post-disaster situation. Type 2 Diabetes is a difficult health condition to manage, and in the case of a disaster where there was no possible other medical care, it is very useful to understand that there are herbs and dietary methods to effectively deal with it. Sam will cover a number of different possibilities and outline the best way to work with these herbs for type 2 diabetes. He also will discuss the problems that present themselves with chronic asthma.
Like many chronic conditions, there are other issues at the heart of asthma that involve a much deeper look into personal health than simply providing herbs to help short term breathing issues. Sam will discuss what some of the approaches are to get at the source of asthma issues, but more importantly for the short-term, what kinds of herbs can be used to help alleviate breathing difficulties and even the onset of respiratory illness, along with herbs to help strengthen and support the respiratory and immune system for people suffering from asthma.
