All parents face daily obstacles, but parents of children with autism experience increased challenges that can result in overwhelming anxiety, depression, self-doubt and sadness. Ultimately, these parents are husbands, wives, sisters, brothers, family and friends who simply wish to experience more fulfilling and satisfying lives with their children.
Dr. Darren Sush is a clinical psychologist and board certified behavior analyst, specializing in therapy for parents of children with autism. Dr. Bernier joins Autism Spectrum Radio to discuss the latest research about autism and what it means to the 1 in 68 now being diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder.
Dr. Bernier is a licensed clinical psychologist, the Clinical Director of the Seattle Children’s Autism Center, and an Associate Professor at the University of Washington. He received his PhD at the University of Washington, his clinical training at UCLA, and also holds degrees from the University of Wisconsin and Tufts University. Dr. Bernier’s clinical and research interests span many aspects of autism--from genetics and neuroscience to diagnostic characterization and cognitive-behaviorally based interventions. As a clinician, author of over 50 publications, author of the book Autism Spectrum Disorders: A Reference Handbook, and as the principle investigator on a number of NIH- and foundation-funded research studies, Dr. Bernier is interested in bridging the gap in our understanding of the relationship between etiology, neurological underpinnings of deficits in social cognition, and the behavioral presentation of autism spectrum disorder.
Ketia Stokes is the 2013 Baltimore City, Maryland Teacher of The Year! Ms. Stokes is a founding staff member and teacher at Green Street Academy, a combined middle-high school with a focus on the green movement and preparing students for green careers. She currently teaches in a self-contained classroom for 6th- to 8th-grade students on the autism spectrum and holds many leadership roles, serving as a teacher mentor, literacy leader and learning strategist.
Ms. Stokes comes from five generations of educators. Her twin sister, who struggled from birth with the effects of a brain tumor, benefited from high-quality special education—and inspired Ms. Stokes to pursue a career of serving students with disabilities.
She currently teaches in a self-contained classroom for 6th to 8th-grade students on the autism spectrum. Join us as Ms. Stokes shares information about children with autism and effective strategies you can use.

This week on Autism Spectrum Radio we explore a sensitive and perhaps under addressed topic, the experience of grief and loss for children and teens with autism. In the course of life, it is inevitable that we are all touched by the loss of a loved one and yet it is not a topic we may think to prepare for. Families with a child who has autism can easily be caught at a loss for what to do or how to best support their child’s natural but painful experience of grief. This week, host Rob Haupt looks at the complexities of supporting children and teens during this vulnerable time. Rob is happy to welcome author Karla Helbert to share her insights as psychotherapist and bereavement counselor who specializes in serving the autism community.
Karla Helbert is a licensed professional counselor (LPC) and has been working as a therapist since 2000. She operates a private psychotherapy practice with a focus on loss, grief and bereavement and specializes in therapy for people with autism spectrum disorders. Prior to opening her private practice, Karla worked for 13 years for a private non-profit organisation serving children, adolescents and adults with autism. She also facilitates bereavement support groups for local hospices and for the MISS Foundation, an international non-profit helping families grieving the death of a child. As a bereaved mother and a trained therapist, she has a deep personal, as well as clinical, understanding of the difficult issues facing those grieving the deaths of loved ones.
Mindee Pinto currently teaches early childhood special education, specializing with children diagnosed on the autism spectrum, in Palatine Illinois. Mrs. Pinto holds a bachelors degree in speech/language pathology and masters degree in early childhood special education. She lives with her husband Michael in Deerfield Illinois, with a their beautiful daughter Jillian.
Judy Cohen has been employed by the Milwaukee Public School system in special education for over 25 years. She began her career as a special education classroom teacher and for the last 17 years has been a diagnostic teacher in the school system. Mrs. Cohen also owns Lakeside Educational Services in Milwaukee. LES specializes in academic coaching/tutoring, as well as teaching and reinforcing organizational/study skills. Mrs. Cohen lives with her husband Jeff of 37 years and has two grown children.
The book, Mikey explains how a young child with autism sees, hears, and feels the world around him in his school environment. Mikey is not just intended for educators; although, all teachers should read it to their classes. It is intended to educate adults as well as young children to increase their awareness and understanding of the child with autism. This book, and others to follow, was inspired by my vast experiences as a teacher working with children with autism.

We are extremely excited to welcome a special guest to the show, Dr. Peter Gerhardt. Dr. Gerhardt is an expert on the use of ABA therapy in support of adolescents and adults with autism spectrum disorders.
Dr. Gerhardt has more than 30 years’ experience utilizing the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis in support of adolescents and adults with autism spectrum disorders in educational, employment, residential and community-based settings. He has authored and co-authored articles and book chapters on the needs of adolescents and adults with ASD and has presented nationally and internationally on this topic. He serves as Chairman of the Scientific Council for the Organization for Autism Research, is on the Editorial Board of Behavior Analysis in Practice and on numerous professional advisory boards, including the Autism Society of America. Dr. Gerhardt received his doctorate from Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey’s Graduate School of Education.
Trish Kane, Director of Programs, provides support and resources through research, field work and personal experience. Trish develops the PFA workshop series by identifying and coordinating partners, topics and speakers. She also organizes family fun events throughout Maryland to bring enjoyment and social opportunities for families. In addition to her work with Pathfinders, Trish is on the Board of Directors for The Abilities Network, a local Maryland community and vocational support organization.
Shelly McLaughlin is responsible for the research and management of information on Autism across the lifespan, including the creation of an Autism By Age navigation tool. Shelly uses her collaborations with experts, research, or personal experiences to pen a monthly Parent Tips article that offers practical solutions to everyday autism challenges. Shelly also serves as an appointed member on the Governor's Interagency Transition Council for Youth with Disabilities.
