Choices in Childbirth - The Doula Report

    in Moms and Family

Today I will be joined by Executive Director, Michele Giordano and Director of Policy and Research, Nan Strauss of Choices in Childbirth. Last fall, CIC introduced an important piece of research. The Doula Report identifies the value of doula support in achieving critical improvements in maternity care in line with the priorities identified in the Affordable Care Act. The report examines the landscape of birth in NYC including health disparities based on race, ethnicity and income as well as challenges for doula work.

Choices in Childbirth is a non-profit organization focused on ensuring that all women have access to maternity care safe, healthy, equitable and empowering. Their mission is to promote evidence based, mother-friendly childbirth options through public education, consumer advocacy and pioneering policy reform. They seek to improve maternity care by providing the public, especially childbearing women and their families with the information necessary to make fully informed decisions relating to how, where and with whom they will give birth. www.choicesinchildbirth.org

Pregnancy, Childbirth & Early Motherhood; How Can Hypnosis Help?

    in Health

In the second of this two part series, Nick & Joanna will talk about how hypnosis can be helpful to decrease stress in pregnancy, prepare and experiecne ease in childbirth, and continue to reduce stress in early motherhood.  Part I focused on how Ayurveda views conception and pregnancy and how this conscious approach can benefit Mother and Baby. Find part I here: http://www.blogtalkradio.com/kalyana/2015/08/12/pregnancy-childbirth-early-motherhood-an-ayurvedic-perspective

This is a very important and tender time for both Mother and Baby and hypnosis is a wonderful tool that can have tremendous benefits not only to the mind and emotions, but also to the physical body. In keeping with an Ayurvedic approach and focus on self care, hypnotherapy definitely has some practical and helpful benefits.  It all boils down to self-care where the most important aspect is consciousness. Even before conception is planned, care should be taken that Mother and Father are in the best of health so that their creation can have the best start; not only being in good health physically but also within their relationship to provide a loving, joyful environment in which the child will learn and grow.

Learn also how hypnosis can help mom and baby have an easeful time in the birth process that reduces stress and pain so the use of pharmaceuticals can be reduced or eliminated.

The Female Solution: Is Childbirth A Joint Decision Between Men and Women?

    in Religion

Our culture is changing. In the old days, a woman had no rights that institutions were bound to respect, unless she had a husband. Today, women are expected to achieve higher education degrees, maintain their own credit rating, purchase their own cars. Many women are very independent, even to the point where some may say,"I don't need a man." Women are even having children as single mothers and never marrying the man. Some men say, "I didn't want to be a father, she had the baby anyway, so I'm not responsible." So they decide not to be involved. But what about when the man wants the child and the woman decides to terminate a pregnancy? Today we examine the joint decision of childbirth.

Is Childbirth A Joint Decision Between Men And Women?

    in Women

Legalized abortion has changed the culture. In the old days, a wife had no rights to decide a when she would give birth, and may have 8, 9, 10 children. Today, women are deciding to give birth without husbands or choosing to end the life of a child even while married, without the approval of their husbands, is it really a woman's sole right to choose? Today we'll examine a few situations.

Get to know CAPPA Faculty - Julie Brill on Childbirth Education

    in Women

Let's get to know Julie Brill, she is one of our wonderful CAPPA Faculty members.  She trains Childbirth Educators and shares her insight and wisdom on this subject (and more) with our listeners.

Julie Brill, CCCE, CLD owns and manages WellPregnancy in Bedford, Massachusetts. She has been teaching childbirth classes and attending births since 1992, and mentoring new birth professionals throughout New England as a member of the CAPPA Faculty since 2003. Julie is honored to have taught thousands of childbirth education students in a variety of settings and hundreds of CAPPA birth professionals. She feels she has the best job in the world, and is lucky to have found her profession and her calling.

Julie graduated from Tufts University with a degree in Sociology and Women’s Studies and completed the Massachusetts Midwifery Alliance Apprenticeship Course. She is certified to present Peggy Huddleston’s Prepare for Cesarean Birth, Heal Faster workshops. She is also a La Leche League Leader and the mother of two homeschooled teenage daughters.

Julie finds that the women who are drawn to doula and childbirth educator work are an amazing group and she feels blessed to be able to mentor, learn from, and work with them. Doulas’ desire to support women during the childbearing year and their choice to work unknown hours at unscheduled times is the inspiration for Round the Circle: A Doula Anthology, her first book, which is available for pre-order at ibreastfeeding.com.
