Mindfulness, mindfulness meditation and mindful living appear to be part of a growing trend for 2014 and beyond. Celebrities and CEOs alike are publicly sharing their reliance on mindfulness meditation as a way to cope with their lives. Mindfulness was a featured topic at the World Economic Forum in Davos in January and included daily mindfulness meditation practice before the start of each day.

The wellness industry is abuzz again with the debate on whether employer-based wellness programs produce a return on investment. The RAND report released in mid-January 2014 analyzed 7 years of data from Pepsico's wellness and disease management strategy. The verdict? Disease management programs drove the lion's share of the ROI. RAND's Dr. Soeren Mattke joins CoHealth Checkup to review RAND's research on workplace wellness programs and what employers need to consider and expect when considering these initiatives.
The numbers are staggering. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 35% of adults aged 20 and over were overweight in 2008, and 11% were obese. More than 40 million children under the age of five were overweight in 2011. And overweight and obesity are the fifth leading cause of death. Employers are grappling with the impact of this condition in a variety of ways, from programs and benefits designed to support weight management to changes in the built environment that encourage healthier food choices and increased physical activity.
Employers have also turned toward incentives and penalties tied to body mass index (BMI), a population-level measure of overweight and obesity. On today's show we welcome Dr. Jonathan Robison. Dr. Robison holds a doctorate in health education/exercise physiology and a master of science in human nutrition from Michigan State University, where he teaches in the Nutrition and Physiology Departments as an Adjunct Assistant Professor. He's served as co-editor of the journal Health at Every Size and is in the process of writing a book on organization and employee well-being, How to Build a Thriving Culture at Work: Featuring the 7 Points of Transformation. He joins us to discuss what he calls a "war" on obesity and to explore what limits existing weight-management approaches.

Happiness comes from your specific perspective on the world - how you see the past, the present, and the future. To live in the present, you must accept the past; make peace with it. Find whatever you can to be grateful for the experience and then free yourself to enjoy life in the present. Allow yourself to be amazed and awed by the mystery of the world and the universe happening around you.
Have a "happiness checkup". Be bold enough to ask yourself, “Am I happy? If you are not happy, confront yourself on how you feel about your past experiences; are you living in the present, and do you dream about the future? Are you taking care of yourself? Do you eat right? Are you sleeping enough? Do you exercise? Are you in need of a healthy relationship or good networking acquaintances?
Dig deeply to access your feelings; stop just be going along for the ride. Look for challenges each day and very aware of what is going on around you; get mentally engaged in your life. You must have something to feel passionate about; something that peaks your interest. If your lack of happiness is due to dynamics of your relationships, ask yourself, “What am I bringing into the relationship?” Am I contributing to the relationship in a manner that nurtures it and helps it stay alive and grow? Be prepared to do something about what is lacking.
Anticipate the future with excitement. Death is the only thing that will stop Tomorrow from coming so participate in making it wonderful. Set yourself up for success by planning good things that are doable: "Tomorrow I’m going to do something nice for somebody. Tomorrow I’m going to get focused on a project I’ve been waiting to do. Tomorrow I will register for a class."
Happiness will find you if you are at peace with the past; be engaged in the present and excited about the future.
