Learn more about Carole Brody Fleet -
At the young age of 40, Carole Brody Fleet had a thriving career in the cosmetics industry. She built a new house from her Mary Kay Cosmetics earnings and became a national winner of top sales awards and numerous accolades. But none of her success could soothe the deep pain she experienced when her husband died after a two year battle with Lou Gehrig’s disease. A young widow with a then, 11 year old daughter, Carole had days when she literally could not get out of bed.
Since the publication of her first book, Widows Wear Stilettos and the formation of her organization,, Carole has become a "go-to" media authority on grief and loss recovery. She has been featured on national, regional and local television and radio, including Good Morning America Now.
BOOKS: Happily Even After: A Guide to getting Through (and beyond) the Grief of Widowhood and Widows Wear Stilettos.
Who Am I? What Do I Do Now? HAPPILY EVEN AFTER Answers Real, Practical, Essential Questions for Widows and Widowers.
Even as these are the two most immediate questions faced by widow/ers, Carole Brody Fleet knows as well as anyone who has faced the abrupt change from couple to single person, those questions multiply exponentially as time goes on.
In HAPPILY EVEN AFTER: A Guide to Getting Through (and Beyond) the Grief of Widowhood, Brody Fleet addresses the most commonly asked questions by widows and those who surround them.
When Carole lost her husband at age forty, there were no resources that spoke directly to her needs as a young widow. The books she turned to spoke only about grief, but Carole knew that focusing on grief was going to keep her in a place of sorrow.
Twelve years later, she is the Founder and CEO of Widows Wear Stilettos, Inc., a non-profit organization and website founded in 2006 and devoted to service. With a monthly newsletter and her partnership in two annual conventions (lovingly referred to as Camp Widow™ and presented by the Soaring Spirits Loss Foundation), Carole’s brand is a recognized imprimatur of quality and trust among grief counselors, therapists and widows themselves.
The questions and issues surrounding the loss of a spouse are numerous and complex immediately following the death as well as months and years later. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, there are an estimated 15 - 20 million widows in this country and that number is rising. Over a million of those are under the age of forty. Carole Brody Fleet’s mission is to lead her readers and the entire widowed community (regardless of age, gender, "technical" marital status or sexual orientation) in a decidedly future-focused direction, giving them the tools, reassurance and confidence to move into a new life.
The success of Michele Brody’s work thrives on the interaction with new communities and environments. She received her BA from Sarah Lawrence College in 1989 and her MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1994. She has utilized a background in the liberal and fiber arts to create site-specific, mixed-media installations, and works of public art generated by the history, culture, environment, nature and architecture of a wide range of venues. While living and working in France, Costa Rica, California, the Midwest, Germany, and her home of New York City, Brody’s art career has developed into a process of working in collaboration with each new community towards developing an interpretation of the sense of a place as an outsider looking in.She has had one person shows in the U.S. and internationally. Brody has also won distinguished awards and grants. During the spring of 2006 she completed three major permanent public art installations in New York and Texas. In 2007 she was commissioned to create a permanent lobby installation for the Jewish Community Center of Manhattan, and debuted the first interactive performance of Reflections in Tea at the 11th Annual D.U.M.B.O. Art Under the Bridge Festival, in Brooklyn, NY. In 2011 she was awarded Best 3-D Entry at the international competition Art Prize in Grand Rapids, MI. She is also in the process of preparing for an outdoor sculpture exhibition for Créations sur-le-champ Land Art at Mont-Saint Hilaire in Canada, and as the Costume designer for an international environmental art pageant in India for the Vaigai River Restoration Project.
