Our August On-Air Myeloma Support Group is discussing ways that patients and caregivers can help boost myeloma research. We have Pat Killingsworth lead the meeting with our guest for the month, Jenny Ahlstrom.
Jenny Ahlstrom was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 2010. After treatment, she wanted to be prepared with a plan of action in case of relapse. She learned how few patients participate in clinical trials and started mPatient Myeloma Radio as a tool to help her and others learn about the latest in myeloma research. She is also the founder of the Myeloma Crowd site and the CrowdCare Foundation. She is a wife to a busy entrepreneur and investor and is the mother of 6 children. Prior to her favorite job as a mom, she worked for IBM as a systems engineer and marketing representative.

A lot is written about seeing our parents through dementia, but not much is available to discuss what it takes to deal with parents who might need our assistance, but who still have all their faculties. How do we finesse a parent who wants to maintain their independence into moving nearer to us; into giving us Power of Attorney to take care of their healthcare and financial needs; to accept daily help? How do we do this while allowing them to maintain their dignity?
With honesty and insight borne of experience, through Elderly Parents With All Their Marbles: A Survival Guide for the Kids, author Pam Carey shares her personal journey as well as the (humorously serious) "Rules of the Road" she developed while caring for her parents.
Anyone who has ever had to care for elderly parents will see their own situations reflected in this witty yet practical guide to surviving the ordeal. You will feel like you’re right by Pam's side as she outlines 49 essential points for navigating the trials of elderly living, the medical issues and the inevitable loss that eventually comes. She illustrates each point with her own sometimes hilarious and often poignant experiences.
This book is a must-read as a resource for anyone dealing with assisting an aging loved one. Please consider purchasing a copy as a gift for a friend, care facility or YOUR children.
Pam wrote the book as a resource for others facing similar journeys. She is also the author of Minor League Mom, A Mother's Journey Through the Red Sox Farm Teams (2009). The mother of Red Sox farm team veterans Tim and Todd Carey, Pamela holds a B.A. from Colby College and an M.A. from Columbia University Teachers College.
Patty is a registered nurse and the CEO and Founder of North Star Elder Care, a division of MLHCC, Inc. She is certified in rehabilitation nursing, case management, life care planning, and is an elder care specialist, and testifying expert. As a registered nurse with close to 25 years experience working in a variety of settings, both in and outside the hospital, she has seen what a difference the right team of professionals can make in caring for you or your loved ones. "When I was in nursing school, my father had a stroke and was paralyzed on his left side. In one day he went from this incredibly independent, strong man, to requiring help with almost everything. I remember us working closely with the rehabilitation team, both in and outside of the hospital setting, and watching my father work very hard to regain his independence. It forever changed the course of my nursing career. I was so grateful to the rehabilitation team for the quality care and hope they gave us and my father. I knew then that I wanted to become a rehabilitation nurse."
Join Dave Nassaney, The Caregiver's Caregiver, author, speaker, life coach, and radio talk-show host for caregivers who are burned out, but his most important role is being a caregiver to his lovely wife, Charlene. His latest book that he is now working on is entitled: The Caregiver's Caregiver, A Guide to Avoiding Burnout. It is designed to teach caregivers who are taking care of their loved ones (due to an illness or disability) how to take care of themselves FIRST. If they don't learn this, they will likely suffer burnout and become as helpless as the person they are caring for. Tune in every Wednesday at noon, PST, (Re-Broadcast Saturdays at 3:30pm PST) for interviews with experts in the caregiving field, as they discuss topics of great interest to caregivers, which will help them avoid burnout. www.DaveTheCaregiversCaregiver.com
Its hard to imagine a company dedicated to caring for the needs of population that could hardly be more vulnerable, the elderly with dementia and/or Alzheimer's, would be engaged in what is believed to be an outright conspiracy and/or Nationwide pattern and practice of depriving them of their civil rights for money. Exploitation! Pick up a newspaper or google elder abuse and it's not so hard to believe anymore. Silverado started with a pure concept and good direction, according to former employees, who left claiming that the quality went completely downhill, as one would expect when it went public like a chain of McDonalds' in 2011. But the stories we are hearing even daily as more people step forward, are shocking, and reveal a far more egregious practice that the World must know to avoid your loved ones being imprisoned and drugged against their will for money. Families are returning to work by necessity and may of them are some of the 43 million Americans who are also caring for an adult family member or friend. Along with trying to climb the corporate ladder, these people are dealing with family issues that squeeze them from both sides.
Many Employers are recognizing this and starting to offer caregiver support groups, caregiver seminars, flexible start and end schedules, and access to other local resources that can help.
Join Flex Hour Jobs as we discuss how flexibility in the workplace can work well for everyone involved.
