The Whispering Swarm, by Michael Moorcock

    in Radio

On April 16th, 2015 the Hermetic Hour with host Poke Runyon will review the new semi-biographical novel by fantasy grandmaster Michael Moorcock "The Whispering Swarm." This remarkable book should be of special interest to magicians and Hermetic students. Moorcock is the modern heir to the mantles of J.R.R. Tolkien, and Robert E.Howard. His fiction is deeply magical and steeped in Hermetic lore. The Whispering Swarm is somewhat experimental. His protagonist is himself and he tells his life story up to his passage from adolesence into adulthood through the entrance into a secret enclave in the multiverse, inhabited by historical and fictional characters he has read about. Raised in London during and after WWll, he discovers an ancient hidden medieval village called the Alsacia, or The Sanctuary, inhabited by magical monks in an old Abbey, a tavern full of swashbuckling cavaliers, including the Musketeers from Dumas and a glamorous Hughwaywoman called Molly Midnight. He also lives in the real world, having a wife and children and a job as an editor, but is driven to escape into The Sanctuary by the tumult of Whispering voices in his head (the Swarm). Most importantly it explores Moorcock's two warring personalities in emotional spiritual and political conflict. He is a romantic at heart and an agnostic socialist in intellect -- so he fights to save King Charles from Cromwell's Ax because his cavalier heroes need his abilities to walk between the worlds. One wonders all through the book, just how much of the fantasy is real, or a metaphor for reality. So, if you want to visit an adult's Land of Oz then follow us through the London fog to the hidden gates of the Sanctuary and we'll find the Swan with Two Necks tavern for a shant of ale and an hour of High Magical Adventure.

    St. John of Sahagon

    in Religion

Rebroadcast of the long running radio program, "The Ave Maria Hour", a presentation of the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement. www.AtonementFriars.org

John Gonzales de Castrillo was born at Sahagun, Leon Spain. He was educated by the Benedictine monks of Fagondez monastery there and when twenty, received a canonry from the bishop of Burgos, though he already had several benefices. He was ordained in 1445; concerned about the evil of pluralism, he resigned all his benefices except that of St. Agatha in Burgos. He spent the next four years studying at the University of Salamanca and then began to preach. In the next decade he achieved a great reputation as a preacher and spiritual director, but after recovering after a serious operation, became an Augustinian friar in 1463 and was professed the following year. He served as master of novices, definitor, prior at Salamanca, experienced visions, was famous for his miracles, and had the gift of reading men's souls. He denounced evil in high places and several attempts were made on his life. He died at Sahagun on June 11, reportedly poisoned by the mistress of a man he had convinced to leave her. He was canonized in 1690 as St. John of Sahagun.

    in Prayer

This is how to say the Holy Rosary

The rosary is a form of combined prayer and meditation that has been around for over 1200 years.  The origin of the rosary dates back to the ninth century where Irish monks would recite and chant the 150 Psalms of the Bible as a major part of their worship.

power of perception with Steven L. Hairfield

    in Spirituality

ving been raised in a very abusive environment, I decided to serve my country in the military. My duties and expertise led me to Vietnam. My search for peace and higher understanding led me to a Zen Buddhist Monastery in South Vietnam, my first encounter with monks and their traditions. I became a Zen Priest through this experience. My natural curiosity, blended with a very acute intuitive sense led me to deeper questions of life and the purpose of self. The monks began to insist that I should learn of Issa? I later learned that Issa, Jesus, had spent much time in what is now known today as India, Pakistan, Ladak, Nepal, and Tibet before returning to the Middle East. Was Jesus taught what He knew? This truly inspired my personal search for knowledge to somehow recreate the Master’s 18 years not mentioned in the Bible. Pushed by this dream for Universal Truth, I traveled to India following an inner urge which led me to my greatest teachers and lessons, Tibetan Masters. They guided me through India, Nepal, and twice into Tibet. While in this part of the world I adapted to the life of a monk.

When I returned home after working with my Eastern teachers I wanted to understand the belief system and studied the greatest belief system of all Religion and Theology, becoming quite interested and fascinated by the field of Metaphysics in the process. Through my years of studies with Zen and Tibetan Monks as well as the Cree and Blackfoot Native Traditions, this true American Monk offers an unparalleled approach to understanding how we directly influence our own experiences. My journey was one of self Mastery, Empowerment while achieving an inner Divine nature. My book is entitled ‘A Metaphysical Interpretation

    Interview with artist Parker-Weston

    in Art

"At times, my skull feels it can no longer contain my thoughts. Now I know why monks drill holes in their heads, to air out.

I reside in what is voted the most conservative big city in the United States, Mesa, Arizona. A concrete welcome-to-anywhere that is built on top of the desert like our human brains extending from mammal and reptile ones. When I was a child, an overpaid psychic told my mother that I would be a writer someday. I was very relieved later she was spared the news that along the way I would become a shop janitor and backpacking drifter before this writing business ever came into play.

Applying the collage or cut-up technique to every facet of my life as possible and letting my subconscious fill in the concepts, I collect refuse of reality to exercise general daily awareness. At times, I feel this is why I do not dream, or at least cannot remember dreaming; spent on lucidity by the time the lights go out. I feel more reactive than creative. I do not wish for any visual harmony between my pieces. They are all my children and they are constantly screaming for each of their fifteen minutes."

John Zaffis has over forty years of experience studying and investigating the paranormal. He has had the opportunity to work for and with his aunt and uncle, Ed and Lorraine Warren. This sent John beyond looking for ghosts and hauntings and into studying demonology under the Warrens. This led into John's involvement with cases of possession and exorcism, which gave him the opportunity to work with prominent exorcists in this field, including Roman Catholic priests, monks, Buddhists, rabbis and ministers. John has assisted and worked with well-known exorcists Bishop Robert McKenna, Father Malachi Martin, and the Reverend Jun.

Over the years, John has collected many hundreds of possessed items either given to or sent to him by people wishing to be rid of them. The John Zaffis Paranormal Museum opened in 2004 in order to display these items, and continues to be open today. John wrote and starred in the documentary film Museum of the Paranormal, released in 2010, which gives the viewer a tour of his museum and the stories behind some of the objects.
