We journey to the island of St. Vincent to explore ancient places and the history of a proud people few know anything about. Our first stop is to the Botanical Gardens of St. Vincent, the oldest such garden of its type in the Western Hemisphere, and we are joined by historian Dr. Edgar Adams for a look into some of the events and experiences that have defined his life and the history of St. Vincent. Then we travel to Fort Charlotte where we meet Augustine Sutherland, a decendant of one of St. Vincent's indigeneous ethnic groups, the Garafuna. Fort Charlotte was built by the British (1793-1806), not to defend against a naval attack but as an inland defense against attacks from the Garafuna, Kalinago and the French. This in evidenced by the fact that the cannons of Fort Charlotte face inland. Augustine shares some of the tragic history his ancestors faced here and some of the challenges he faced growing up as a Garafuna on St. Vincent.

In her own words: "I'm somewhat restricted with being wheelchair / bed bound, but I don't want to let that prevent me from pursuing my passion.
I adore all aspects of photography and look forward to continuing to delve deeper as time goes on.

Our guest this morning is Rose Hein, Founder of Golden Heart Ranch.
As a child, Rose’s son Justin was diagnosed with Epilepsy. Like so many children with special needs, Justin depends entirely upon his family for his care, love and safety and like so many special children, Justin has never spent a night away from home. Rose always believed Justin’s future would be at home with his family - but the question loomed, what would happen when she was no longer there to provide for him. A few years ago, she knew the time had come to secure Justin’s future.
Golden Heart Ranch is a community that will provide, on and off site jobs, organic gardens, ranch style homes where “Ranch Hands” can live permanently, equestrian therapy, recreation, friendships and opportunities for young adults with special needs to reach their fullest potential in an environment that is physically and emotionally safe.
Together with a dedicated group of volunteers, parents and a very supportive community, they have created a solid non-profit whose vision not only encompasses building this exceptional ranch, but to help others create a sustainable ranch model as well.
It is their mission to give these special kids a home that keeps their hearts golden and their belief in the goodness of people and life intact.
This morning, we’re going to hear more about this amazing project and one of the many ways they’re raising funds for it, including a fantastic event taking place this weekend in Manhattan Beach, the Golden Heart Ranch Urban Adventure!

Tonight your hosts Danielle Paccione and Bill Bachman discuss Isla de las Munecas...The Island of the Dolls!
The best-known chinampa in Xochimilco belonged to a man named Julián Santana Barrera, a native of the La Asunción neighborhood. Santana Barrera was a loner, who was rarely seen in most of Xochimilco. He came to fame because he would collect the old broken bodies of dolls from the canals and rubbish trips, and then hang them from branches and tie them to tree trunks to keep away evil spirits and appease the spirit of a dead girl he had found. He would say that he believed that the dolls were somehow still “alive” but forgotten by their owners and at night, these dolls are said to walk around the island killing animals. Before this, it was thought that no one lived on this chinampa, but Santana Barrera was there, living in a hut with no services and generally did not receive visitors, other than family. The display of dolls and parts attracted attention of the press. Eventually, he stated to them that the dolls were there to keep away evil spirits and to help with the harvests in his gardens. His favorite was called La Moneca and he frequently moved the dolls around among the tree branches.

They will have special guess herbalist and expert in growing food in a greenhouse and aquaponic gardening.Herbs were our first wonder drugs, and they remain powerful medicine to this day. Herbal traditions remain strong. An estimated 90 percent of Africans, 40 percent of Chinese, and 70 percent of the population in India rely on herbal remedies. In Germany, 70 percent of doctors prescribe plant-based medicines. There, “herbal medicines are completely accepted as drugs,” says Joerg Gruenwald, PhD, founder of Analyze & Realize AG, a German firm specializing in natural ingredients. “These treatments are part of the normal training of physicians and in pharmacology, too.”As people migrated, herbal traditions spread. Many of the herbs that were once highly specific to a region and a population are now available to the rest of the world as teas, extracts, and supplements — and even as growing plants — offering us new opportunities for herbal treatment. Now, even in the United States, 38 percent of adults use some form of botanical medicine. Our Healthcare awareness we would like to solute Dr. Sebi for is contribution to herbal self healing for over 40 years, and to one of his patient Left Eye from TLC.
