BIG RAY & LOIS JAZZ MASTERS & BLUE

    in Music

Lee Ritenour made quite a splash four years ago with his A Twist of Jobim CD, in which he pulled together a rotating cast of all-stars to offer a program of contemporary jazz updates of classics from the Antonio Carlos Jobim songbook. He’s used the same formula for his latest offering, A Twist of Marley.

  • Hybrid Jazz From Trish Hennessey - with Chris McNulty!

    in Music

This is the third visit from our most awesome and talented friend, Chris McNulty.  If I had my way, she'd be with me on almost every occasion.  But this woman has been blissfully busy - and part of that has to do with enjoying the success of her latest project, released in March.

"Eternal" is the seventh album from Our Beautiful Wonder From Down Under (she'll love that!).  And it's full of the most sincere readings of timeless lyrics that you could possibly conjure.  Chris has been singing Jazz with utmost clarity for a long time, but losing her son in 2011 took a toll that catapulted her in many directions.  When she was able to surface, her voice took on a new and raw honesty.  Her work had garnered attention with "The Song That Sings You Here" in her native Australia.  She won the prestigious Bell Award there in 2013.  The attention has grown enormously since that time.  Which brings us to this new musical chapter.

In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy in 2012, Chris found herself with no electricity, heat or water in New York - the city she adopted when she moved to the States in the 80's.  In the cold solitude of that reality, the formation of "Eternal" was born. Contemplation of sorrow, forcing hope into the pain, feeling a myriad of emotions so strong that they had to be conveyed....this is what Chris needed to give to us.  Sharing loss this personal, yes.  But striving to enable a common bond.  And one of the most important: faith in the knowledge that love transcends ALL.  Love brings us home.

"Eternal" has been lauded by some of the sharpest critics on the scene - each one, almost overcome with praise.  Because the truth is in Chris McNulty's interpretation at every instances.  Each song becomes HERS.  Hear a gifted artist at her peak. Join us on 8/18 at 2 p.m. ET.

    America's Classical Music Jazz

    in Music

This evening, I will interview and share music of Maija Rejman a jazz vocalist who resides in the Washington Metropolitan area.  When she was nine years old, she began performing on several Jacksonville, FL television stations.  At 11 years old, she sang regularly on the radio for the USO in Newport, Rhode Island, and on WEEI, Boston. Then at age 12 local Boston songwriters started hiring Maija to do new song demos.  After graduating from high school, she sang briefly with Bobby Timmons at the original Bohemian Caverns in Washington, D.C.  In 1987, Maija sang at the Apollo Theatre winning one of the weekly contests.  As a result, she started performing in all the major venues in the Washington Metropolitan area.  Over the years, Maija has performed with many great jazz artists such as Bobby Timmons, Keter Betts, Ron Elliston, Charlie Byrd, Buck Hill, Bob Butta, Robert Redd, Chuck Redd, Tommy Cecil, James King, Wade Beach, David Kane, Drew Gress, Naser Abadey, Lenny Robinson, Tony Martucci, Mike Crotty and Claudio Roditi.  Join us this evening at Jazz Notes keeping jazz alive.

    America's Classical Music Jazz

    in Music

This evening, I will interview jazz vocalist Lutalo Olutosin and play tunes from his CD, Sweet Lou’s Blues.  After 35 years in the US Military, Colonel Lutalo Olutosin decided to pursue his musical dream and introduce his musical talents to the world.  He is known as jazz vocalist, Sweet Lu Olutosin. On his recent release Sweet Lou’s Blues, we hear Jeremy Pelt, Jerome Jennings, Tivon Pennicott, and Mike Carn.   This year,  Sweet Lu completed the first of two 2015 European tours where he headlined the Frank Sinatra Centennial tribute show "Cheek to Cheek" with the Antonio Ciacca Orchestra.

Born in East Chicago, Indiana.  Raised during early life in Gary, Indiana, Lutalo (Lu) moved to the Deep South (Madison, Mississippi) in the mid 1970.   He was heavily influenced by his family of gospel singers and musicians. While in the US Military, he embarked on a music career that included performances in Jazz, R&B and musical stage productions, across South Eastern United States.  Lou blends straight-ahead and modern Jazz styles with bossa nova and soulful rhythms during his performances.  Join me as we discuss his career and explore his music.  Jazz Notes keeping jazz alive!

Hybrid Jazz From Trish Hennessey - with Carter Calvert & Wayne Jones!

    in Music

Carter Calvert is known in QUITE a few circles - she is, without hype - a respected fixture in the New York Theater scene. Carter has brought life to "Always...Patsy Cline" - as well as "Annie Get Your Gun" and "Cats."  She co-starred with Gregory Porter and Eloise Laws in "It Ain't Nothing But the Blues" and has traveled the world with the touring company of "Smokey Joe's Cafe."  TV appearances and voice-over work for Wendy's, MTV and Amazon - and a list of household names that have shared the stage with her - we could be here for days!  Carter has returned to a first love: Jazz - with a new album called "It's a Man's World."  All male-originated songs done from a female perspective.  It's divine!  And she has a release party coming in her stomping grounds soon - let's celebrate in the first hour of the show :)

In the third hour, Wayne Jones drops by!  He might not stay long because he's covering a LOT of territory while he's in the States.  In Australia, he is known as one of the mightiest session bassists of all time!  He's also a songwriter and arranger and master clinician.  For over three decades, Wayne has gifted other musicians with the beauty of that fluid, funky and fearless bass.  With his years of studio work - and his TV/film credits - Wayne thought it was time to release another body of work to feed the Jones-hungry crowd who demanded it.  There are five tracks on "Mr. Jones" - but those are filled with the greatness of Wayne's bass and guests: Rick Braun, Mike MacArthur and Philippe Saisse!  He'll be with Mike on the last Sunday in August - in Clearwater, Florida.  But he found the time beforehand to visit with us!  There is so much wonderful music to share - join us in The Chat Room and let's enjoy it together!
