Many great jazz saxophonist have lived in Pennsylvania. This evening, I am interviewing and sharing the music of jazz saxophonist Tim Warfield, Jr., a native of York, Pennsylvania. Tim was awarded several awards. In 1999, he was awarded, Talent Deserving Wider Recognition, in DownBeat Magazines 49th Annual Jazz Critics poll. In August of 2011, he was recognized in the listing of Rising Star Tenor saxophonists, in the Downbeat Magazine Critics Poll. On November 7, 2015, The Clef Club of Jazz and the Performing Arts, recognized Tim, as Tenor saxophonist of the Year, at their annual Clef Club Jazz Awards, in Philadelphia. He has appeared on several GRAMMY-nominated recordings on the Stefon Harris CD, The Grand Unification Theory, as well as Dear Louis and Sonic Trance, both under the leadership of trumpeter and New Orleans native, Nicholas Payton. Tim has performed with the following musicians: Donald Byrd, Michelle Rosewoman, Marcus Miller, Christian McBride, Dizzy Gillespie, Johnny Coles, Isaac Hayes, Peter Nero, Shirley Scott, Jimmy Smith, Billy Paul, Kenny Barron, Charles Fambrough, Terell Stafford, Papa John Defrancesco, Joey Defrancesco, Trudy Pitts, just to name a few. A really good friend turned me onto True Blue Jazz this year - and I'm eternally grateful! This absolutely fantastic Jazz series is in its third year - an alternative event source to the Rehoboth Beach Jazz Festival. Eddie Sherman - with a major career and sold-out shows in his own background - met with Peggy Raley, a respected vocalist who relished Jazz. Together, they decided that their popular beach community needed to focus on "Straight Ahead" Jazz. The Great American Standards from 1900 to the present. They were looking for interpretation and innovation. They were tired of only ONE kind of Jazz being represented with the RBJF. So, they put their heads together and came up with a beautiful solution :)
Once again this year, True Blue Jazz is giving you a delicious taste of The Real Deal - including Eddie and Peggy in performance. Also involved: The Fred Hughes Trio (Fred returns to "Hybrid Jazz" on 10/27!) - and that trio includes Amy Shook on bass. Amy is wrapping up her electric stint with Diva Jazz as part of the important foreground of "Tappin' Thru Life" with Maurice Hines! This trio is making a repeat performance in the True Blue Jazz series - and they SMOKE the Clear Space Theatre! Also set to star: young Geoff Galante (GRACIOUS, wait until you get a load of this one on trumpet!) The Jackie Browne Jazz Nonet has a terrific reputation - Eddie can't say enough about Jackie - so this night is gonna sizzle, too! And Diane Schuur is booked for a very special night - the birthday of yours truly on 10/16! Woo HOO!
There's another reason why this lovely endeavor needs our support: what they do for the children in Sussex County, Delaware. True Blue's "Youth Jazz Educational Initiative" is enough to make you cry - it's that generous! Join us on 10/12 and get ready to be excited!
Amina Figarova was born in Baku, Azerbaijan. Piano lessons came early - and she trained to become a classical concert performer. In the late 80's, she became immersed in Jazz studies at the Rotterdam Conservatory. Coming to the States in 1989, she completed her education at Berklee. It was there that she met Bart Platteau, a flutist from Belgium.
Together, Amina and Bart were invited - in 1998 - to join the Monk Institute Summer Jazz Colony in Aspen. And there have been countless shows - everywhere - since then. And a baker's dozen of albums! "Blue Whisper" is her current project, full of personal reflection and haunting melodies. With Amina on this gorgeous ride, is her touring sextet - and a bevy of prestigious guests. Including past "Hybrid Jazz" visitor Wayne Escoffery. And a man whose name you've heard quite a bit on the show, bassist Luques Curtis.
We'll certainly heard tracks from this incredible CD - and talk to Amina about the road that took her to such articulate expression of her musical heart. We'll also hear offerings from November Babies - this month is full of strong Jazz voices and instrumentalists. We might even thrown in some December children - Amina is one of those :)
