Audio Book, Black Abolitionists chp 9 Traitors and Loyalists By Benjamin Quarles

    in Education

Dating from its origin, the Negro press printed the names of black informants,Freedom's Journal listing those of Moses Smith, formerly of Baltimore, and Nathan Gooms of New York, in its issue of November 7, 1828. The mere appearance of these names in the columns of the weekly was a sufficient deterrent to die other informers whose identity the editors threatened to reveal. When Martin R, Delany was editor of The Black Underground  Dr. Martin R. Delaney, founder of the Pittsburgh Mystery in 1842 and later was co-editor of the North Star.

In August 1858 two runaways were betrayed by John Brodie, who had promised to assist them in returning to Covington, Kentucky, to effect the liberation of relatives. Brodie's treachery nearly cost him his life.  He was seized by a group of Negroes, who proceeded to give him three hundred blows with a paddle, a stroke for each dollar he was supposed to have received from the slave-catchers. Only the presence of the influential Henry Highland Garnet saved Brodie from further punishment. The badly mauled informer delivered himself to the police authorities, to be placed in jail for safe-keeping

Audio Book, Harriet Jacobs ~Survivor of Slavery, Abolitionist and Author

    in Education

The Gist of Freedom www.BlackHistoryUniversity.com is pleased to present to you the audio book of Harriet Jacobs, an African American abolitionist! Mrs. Jacobs  became active in the antislavery movement, and at the urging of several female abolitionists, she wrote “Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl,” which was published in 1860. Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl, is a powerful depiction of the sexual abuse of female slaves.

Harriet Jacobs would thwart repeated sexual advancements made by slavers for years, then escape to the North. She would later publish an account of her anguished life in her autobiography, Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl.

Harriet had previously asked Norcom for permission to marry a free black man. Norcom had violently refused. Now Harriet had a plan to disrupt his fight for sexual conquest: She had become friends with a caring white man -- an unmarried lawyer. She would become sexually involved with this man, become pregnant, and an infuriated Norcom would sell her and her child.

A child was conceived.  The harassment continued even after she bore the lawyer another child. Finally, after she learned that Norcom was preparing to put her children to work as plantation slaves, she had had enough. In June of 1835, after seven years of mistreatment, Harriet escaped.

Harriet was actively involved with the abolition movement before the launch of the Civil War. During the war she used her celebrity to raise money for black refugees. After the war she worked to improve the conditions of the recently-freed slaves.

In October 2009, Benjamin Francis was arrested and hit with many charges after his co-defendant told on him. Francis wrote a letter that led to his own charge of contracting a murder and witness tampering, armed robbery and handgun in commission of felony charges. He was put in solitary confinement after the jail officials opened his letter. It was at this point that Francis broke down and lost all hope of ever being free again. In his broken state, Franicis cried out to God, asking Him to change him. Francis also promised God that if He got him out of this predicament, then he would serve God with his life. Lockdown in His Word, Francis' first book, shares the story of how it all began and how God's spirit has forever changed Francis to be God's servant.  His second book titled, The Quaran, and this Servant, is also available for purchase.
