SYNOPSIS: Betty Tucker came of age in Belle Glade, Florida, infamous for its poverty and violence (e.g., see the Wikipedia entry and the 2006 documentary One Percent). Her childhood was one of debilitating poverty, borne of racism: exploitive migrant labor, multiple rapes and other abuse, chronic illness among her family and acquaintances ... the list is long and bitter. Betty survived not only by sheer hard work but also by nurturing a nascent belief that she deserved better. She moved to California, earned her college degree, and raised a family. Then, in 1997, she began a long and eventually successful search for the twin girls she had given up for adoption thirty years earlier.
AUTHOR BIO: A native of Troy, Alabama, Betty Tucker has a degree in behavioral science from the University of San Francisco. She also has a Clear Multiple Subject Teaching Credential. She worked for nineteen years with the U.S. Postal Service and for nineteen years with the San Francisco Unified School District. She has five children and four grandchildren and now lives in Richmond, California, and in Montgomery, Alabama. Thank you for your consideration.
Fear, insecurity, sexual abuse, want, neglect: This memoir will look beyond the description of these difficulties in the author's life to examine how they stifled her ability to shape her own life, how she acquired the tools she needed to take more control of her life, and what impact her choices, both intentional and unintentional, had on her life and those of her children.
Tony Abbott is a prolific children's book author. He has graciously agreed to visit us in Beantown to speak about his works and give advice to young writers.
When he began reading bedtime stories to his children, the spark of writing he had had for so many years finally turned to children’s books. After many failures, his first published book, Danger Guys, was written while taking a writing class with renowned children’s author, Patricia Reilly Giff.
DSC03371Since then Tony has written over ninety-five books for readers ages 6 to 14, including many series (The Secret of Droon, The Haunting of Derek Stone, Underworlds, Goofballs, to name a few) and novels for older readers, including Kringle, Firegirl, The Postcard, and Lunch-Box Dream. His publishers include HarperCollins, Hyperion, Scholastic, Random House, Little, Brown, Egmont, and Farrar Straus Giroux.
Over 12 million of Tony’s books have been sold worldwide, and his series and novels have been translated into Italian, Spanish, Korean, French, Japanese, Polish, Turkish, Chinese, and Russian. Several of his books were named Children’s Book-of-the-Month Club selections and Junior Library Guild selections and have appeared on state reading lists, including the Texas Bluebonnet list, and the Great Lakes Great Award Master List, and Choose to Read Ohio.
Firegirl won the Golden Kite Award for Fiction presented by the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators.
In the spring of 2009, The Postcard was honored with the Mystery Writers of America’s Edgar Allan Poe Award for best mystery in the juvenile category.
He is currently a member of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators, the Yale Center for British Art, and other esteemed arts organizations.

Judy’s outrageously fun family performances have created a ruckus throughout the USA wherever children and families gather. She’s performed twice in concert at the request of President Clinton. The organizers of the New York City fundraiser for the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric Aids Foundation and Robert DeNiro’s Tribeca Family Street Fair know the effect she has on audiences and have asked Judy to return year after year to create a ruckus in their neighborhood. The children at the Nyumbani Orphanage in Kenya experienced the joy of working with Judy when she traveled twice to Nairobi for week-long songwriting workshops. The songs are available on a fundraising CD for the orphanage.
This is the week of the show that we talk about people sharing their message through publishing. We talk to authors, publishers, speakers…people with a message to share. Betty shares insights in her new book with us today.
