How To Legalize Backyard Beekeeping
Regardless of the fact that there is a tremendous decline in the bee population due to Colony Collapse Disorder, amongst other diseases, there are still many areas where backyard beekeeping has been banned. The reason for the ban in many cases is mostly due to lack of knowledge about bees as well as fear of lawsuits. The plight to legalize beekeeping in a community is not something many beekeepers want to undertake. The consequences beekeepers that challenge these laws face range from risk of be

How To Start Beekeeping With Marina Marchese & Kim Flottum
Beekeeping can be one of the most rewarding experiences. Whether you are an avid gardener, a honey connoisseur or just want to do your part to help the bees, one of the best ways to learn about bees is to have your own hives. In areas such as NYC where the ban has been lifted on beekeeping, it's become a popular hobby and for some, a new business venture.
However, beekeeping is not something that one simply signs up for like a class at the gym or can be done leisurely like a crossword puzzle. It is a big responsibility and is also something that requires a basic understanding of bees. It can also be quite costly if you do not know what you are doing or have good guidance.
In this special segment of The Organic View Radio Show, host, June Stoyer will be joined by Marina Marchese, author of Honeybee: Lessons from an Accidental Beekeeper and Kim Flottum, editor of Bee Culture Magazine to talk about how you can learn to become a beekeeper. We will talk about options for purchasing equipment, kinds of bees, where to locate your hive, how to find a mentor and so much more! Stay tuned!
Bios: Marina Marchese is a true renaissance woman and an entrepreneur. From her love of honeybees, she discovered the medicinal benefits created by her beloved honeybees. She decided that this was something that needed to be shared with the world and launched Red Bee ® Artisanal Honey. Marina has created an entire line of skin care products that are derived from the honeybee. As a true lover and defender of honeybees, she also educates people about the many misconceptions about bees and why people need to embrace the power that these special beings offer.
Kim Flottum is the editor of Bee Culture magazine, the author of The Backyard Beekeeper (Quarry Books, 2005), and an editor of the ABC & XYZ of Bee Culture, 41st Edition (A.R. Root Company, 2006).

The Neonicotinoid View: Neonicotinoid Impact On Bee Growth
In the world of beekeeping, neonicotinoids have maintained the spotlight as the scientific evidence continues to grow regarding the decline of the world's bee population. Neonicotinoids are defined by the EPA as a class of insecticides with a common mode of action that affects the central nervous system of insects, causing paralysis and death. All of the neonicotinoids were registered after 1984 and were not subject to reregistration. Some uncertainties have been identified since their initial registration regarding the potential environmental fate and effects of neonicotinoid pesticides, particularly as they relate to pollinators. Data suggests that neonicotinic residues can accumulate in pollen and nectar of treated plants and may represent a potential exposure to pollinators. Adverse effects data as well as beekill incidents have also been reported, highlighting the potential direct and/or indirect effects of neonicotinic pesticides. Therefore, among other refinements to ecological risk assessment during registration review, the Agency will consider potential effects of the neonicotinoids to honeybees and other pollinating insects. Dr. David Goulson, Professor of Biological Sciences at the University of Sterling and his team have conducted new research titled “Neonicotinoid pesticide reduces bumble bee colony growth and queen production.” In this special series called “The Neonicotinoid View”, hosts, June Stoyer and special co- host, Tom Theobald will be joined today by Dr. David Goulson, Professor of Biological Sciences at the University of Sterling to discuss his research.
Stay tuned!

Earth Works Presents: Tanya Fields and The BLK ProjeK
Inspired by her experiences as a single working mother living in a marginalized community, in 2009 Tanya Fields founded the BLK ProjeK.
She hoped to respond to the sexist institutional policies, structurally reinforced cycles of poverty, and harsh inequities in wealth and access to capital resulting in far too many women being unable to rise out of poverty and sustain their families.
The group was nominated for a 2011 Union Square Award and Tanya has the honor of being a Green for All Fellows, through which she connects with a national cohort of environmental justice change agents.
With a Bachelor’s in Political Science from Baruch College, and a talent for public speaking, blogging and singing,Tanya has become a sought after speaker.
She provided a widely praised keynote speech at the 2012 "Just Food" conference, and served as a plenary panelist for the 2011 conference of the Northeast Sustainable Agriculture Working Group.
Previous to the BLK ProjeK, Tanya worked with several high profile environmental organizations located in the South Bronx - Mothers on the Move, Sustainable South Bronx and the Majora Carter Group. Tanya built upon the network, skills, resources and knowledge she gained through those experiences to create the BLK ProjeK.
She currently writes a twice monthly column on food and food justice for EBONY.com
