Today's show 7.30.14
On the July 30th broadcasting of the Loisirslit’s Radio Show, we will be showcasing some of our city’s brightest movers and shakers in literacy, arts, theatre, music, fashion, and healthy living. Today’s show is being broadcast from Bin 428, a boutique wine store that sells over 400 wines, microbrews & spirits from every price range and category. Our guest today include Darrell Greiwe, who is bringing his appreciation for Old World wine onto the shelves of Bin 428 causing this selection to slowly flourish.
Additionally, we have the honor of chatting with Sommelier Brian D. Perkins. Brian is an experienced wine industry insider with an advanced knowledge of luxury wines and spirits. He is capable of shepherding an idea from vision, planning to strategy, and implementing the idea. He will be showcasing some wines and a champagne from Spain, France, and Italy. Also joining Loisirslit today is a true shaker; well, a true cocktail shaker. Mr. Marvin J. Allen is an author and true pioneer in the bartending and spirit world. Located in the Hotel Monteleone, the Carousel Bar has been spinning for almost 65 years. If you are lucky enough to grab a coveted barstool, each 15 minute rotation is the time to meet him. He is here to talk about his new book “Magic in a Shaker”, which is a must-read for any bartender whether they are beginners, experienced, or just a connoisseur of spirits and cocktails. His book is “seasonal”, but he can explain what he means by that.
Our talented guest co-host for today is Jennifer Pagan with music provided by our resident band and Dj BLacK PeaRl.
John McElveen joins host Duane Duggan to discuss new construction in Boulder. John is almost a hometown boy, with 36 years spent here in Boulder. John moved to the area in 1972 after finishing his undergrad degree. John had ideas of attending law school, but those ideas gave way to a real estate career that has now spanned over 30 years.
Early years of bartending at "the Sink on the Hill" and occasional stand-in/print double work for Robin Williams on the Mork & Mindy series gives John unique insights into Boulder (including great stories about the "Old Days" of Boulder).
John and his wife, Derdre, live in one of Boulder's old neighborhoods on the west side of town, and have two young boys as well as a grown son. You can run into John at soccer fields, Little League Baseball diamonds, and at YMCA basketball games, cheering on or coaching his sons' teams.
John's career in local real estate includes 30 years of resale experience in addition to working with several of Boulder's builders and developers on new home projects such as Winding Trail Village and Wonderland Hills in the 1970's. John has also worked with developers on new urban, mixed use and condominium projects that you see in Boulder's downtown now!
A what, now?
Ca•ter•ing whore, n: someone who works for hire, serving, bartending, at any variety of event or function, bearing no allegiance to one company, accepting any shift possible, working as often and as long as necessary to make ends meet and to buy stiff drinks at the end of the day and/or create art; synonym: catering mercenary.
Huh? What? Who? C'mon, most of us have worked in the food industry at some point, right? Well, Sean did what we all want to do after that experience, he bitched about it in his very own comic!
We're gonna hear all about some of these stories from the man himself, as well as the usual geeky-tom-foolery ... cuz that's how we do!
Juicy, gossipy, high society catering stories from a geek?! BRING IT!!
Obviously, a guy who wrote and drew his own comic is up to more than catering and has new projects he's working on ... BUT WHAT?! Listen to the show, and find out!
Here, go buy his book, too!

How a bartending course back in 1979 led to a series of coincidental events that enabled me to make a series of decisions that affected my whole life in the most positive way. The morale is to seize the moment and do not hesitate to move forward.
Life With A Twist will be interviewing Minyanna Farmer, Director of the Authentic Bartending School of Maryland. We will be discussing cocktails, trade schools, and young entrepreneurship. Visit www.authenticbartendingmd.com
I actually tried out Bartending. I was able to try it out and see how I'd do. I did pretty well, surprising myself with some things I thought would be problematic for me. Speed is still a slight issue, but my memory worked well and I remembered who wanted what drinks. I think I handled a lot of it well and I learned what I need to brush up on and I'm okay with that. Let's discuss our trials and errs.
I've decided that my next job will be Bartender. I don't know when or where in particular, But that's what's next for me. I'm still writing my stories and I'm going to publish SOON! But for a "Day Job," Bartender seems to be what's next for me.
I can tell, more or less, that this is the way it's supposed to be for me because it IS all falling into place. My Live-In boyfriend, Adam, is paying the bulk of a Bartending class (With my understanding of alcohol being... lower than average, I could use a boost!) my friends are all very supportive and I'm starting to mold my life to it- I'm improving my health and fitness/activity level!
That's when I knew it was right. I started getting more active and picking up on things more easily- helpful when becoming a bartender. I just feel that this is right for me and I want to share how I think this can help you with your... forward thinking practices.
Please join me. I will be trying the 15 minute format and might go over, if BTR will allow. I appreciate your patience and interest. thank you!
Allison Hobbs, know how to make your summer sizzle with her hot book, No Boundaries.Just out of law school, Jaguar is deep in debt and takes a bartending job as an easy way to make money before he gets on the fast-track of corporate law. But when he meets a mysterious beauty named Fonia, Jaguar is intrigued. Handsome and confident, Jag has never had problems attracting the opposite sex, but Fonia is elusive and presents a challenge.
An old friend offers Jag an opportunity to make extra cash bartending at a private party. But the party is nothing like Jag has ever experienced. Not even the wildest frat party could compare to this extravaganza where no pleasure is forbidden.
But the biggest shocker comes when Jag realizes that Fonia is heavily into bondage and submission. She belongs to a dominant master and Jag hates to watch her surrender to her deviant lover. Fonia has captured Jag’s heart, and over time he tries to convince her to break away from her brutal lover and understand that true love should never hurt.
