Milling About with Gary U.S. Bonds

Gary U.S. Bonds joins host Robin Milling to talk about his new book, By U.S. Bonds, That's My Story. Written with a foreword by Steven Van Zandt, it's an autobiography that's a love story, according to co-writer Stephen Cooper who helped Gary organize his life into 20 chapters.
Impossible as that seems, the stories are classic such as meeting Bruce Springsteen and forming a friendship that still thrives. As Gary recalls Bruce came to his show in New Jersey circa '76 and years later called him to record Dedication. Gary tells Robin he repaid the favor, gifting Bruce a '57 Chevy with 'Dedication' emblazoned on the fender. Bruce still proudly drives it around Jersey.
Gary's career began during the racially charged '50s where music might be color blind but the world certainly wasn't. He says he'd perform at all-white clubs, painfully aware of the segregation, but blended in as an entertainer and never had a problem. It was only touring with Dick Clark's Caravan of Stars in the early '60s that he experienced racism when he couldn't stay at the same hotel as white bands like Bobby Rydell.
At 74, Gary has lived a life of music and still does celebrating his birthday at BB Kings in NYC where musicians come to honor his musical legacy. There's plenty more story to be told.

Roger Rabbit Creator Gary K Wolf

Guest for N the Queue this episode is the creator of Roger Rabbit Gary K Wolf.
With the support of his parents from an early age, Wolf went on to become a successful author, screenwriter, lecturer and entertainment consultant. He is best known for his creation of Roger Rabbit, the zany cartoon character who cohabitates with humans. Wolf's ground breaking novel Who Censored Roger Rabbit? went on to become the 1988 Academy Award-winning Walt Disney/Steven Spielberg blockbuster film Who Framed Roger Rabbit?.
Wolf's interest in animation and writing began when he was a child growing up in the Midwest. "My parents encouraged me to read. Anything. As long as I read. Being a kid, I read comic books and almost nothing else."
Wolf's choice of reading material eventually expanded from comic books to noir mysteries and science fiction. He became an acclaimed science fiction author with three published novels. For his fourth novel he decided to write something radically different, something that would combine his love for his three favorite genres, comics, mysteries, and science fiction.
Wolf shares with us his inspirations for his projects and what motivates him to continue to follow his dreams. He will share his past, current, and future projects. Could there be a sequel to Who Framed Roger Rabbit? Hmmmm...

Part 19: Close-Up Spotlights Sports Reporter Barry Sankey

From first pitch to kick-off, center ice to tip-off… for over 35 years, Barry Sankey has covered it all. As an award-winning sports writer for The Phoenixville Newspaper, The Phoenix, a weekly and former daily paper for more than 100 years, his love for sports reporting goes beyond the professional level extending to collegiate, high school, and even local youth leagues.
Writing was always a driving force in Barry’s life winning story-writing contests at his elementary school in Limerick, PA. By freshman year of high school, he was the coordinator and writer for a local section about Spring-Ford Junior High School in two local weekly newspapers, The Inter-Borough Press and Weekly Advertiser. Before even finishing high school, Barry started writing for the local Pennsylvania paper, The Mercury in Pottstown, PA, and then went on to earn his Bachelor’s of Arts degree in Journalism from Temple University in Philadelphia with a minor in political science.
Professionally, Barry Sankey’s record speaks for itself, having reported for such Pennsylvania papers as The Mercury, the old Philadelphia Bulletin, a weekly The Spring-Ford Reporter, and currently The Phoenix, which is part of the large Journal Register Company whose many papers also use Barry’s stories in their editions as part of a sharing process. Barry is the recipient of multiple Keystone Press Awards for his work that appears in The Mercury, The Times Herald in Norristown, and the Delaware County Times to name a few.
At the professional level, Barry is a die-hard Philadelphia fan. It’s refreshing to hear Barry speak about his passion for covering high school sports. “To most high coaches I talk with, the importance of high school sports is truly an extension of the classroom."
