Michigan Department of Nature Resources Goes after Family Farms to Protect Pork Industry Mark Baker, a family farmer and Veteran of the United States Air Force will explain how the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is going after his free-range pigs due to a new classification that makes Mangalitsa Hogs illegal. The Michigan DNR is threatening to destroy the entire herd and arrest Mark as a felon. Mark feels that the reason this action is being taken against his family farm and others is because the state is protecting the Michigan Pork Producers Association’s interest in large confined pork operation. This is more proof of a government totally out of control and works for the corporations against the individual - in this case the family farm. The State of Michigan is determined to destroy the American family farm. Every American should be outraged by this anti-American action. About Bakers Green Acres Bakers Greeen Acres is a small family farm set in a larger farm community in beautiful northern lower Michigan. Local food, sustainably grown, is something they value and promote. Pasture, the product of sunshine and soil, is the basis of our meat production. Their chickens are raised on pasture for as much of the year as our northern climate permits. Their goats, both meat and dairy, are also on grass and browse pastures from the first tender buds of spring to the bitter end of fall. Pasture enables them to raise healthier, happier animals that result in the best tasting, highest quality meat possible Visit Bakers Green Acres at www.bakersgreenacres.com Email firstname.lastname@example.org
Our guests this morning are Chef and Owner of The Ripe Choice Catering Kitchen, Tammy Lipps and Chef Laura Mandracchia owner of Cake Bakeshop. Also joining us are Gretchen Tiernan and Megan Richardson of Sand Spa.
In addition to her husband, Mark Lipps, her local catering kitchen and The Ripe Choice-To-Go business are part of a family of three boys, one dog, three fish and a tortoise. They have one son out of college, one in college and one still in high school.
In 2011, Chef Laura Mandracchia became the owner of Cake Bakeshop. Laura comes from a long line of bakers as both her grandmother and great grandmother were bakers in Denmark. Laura’s greatest culinary influence and hero is her Mormor (mother’s mother in Danish). Whether they were making something as simple as coffee and pastry, going to the Farmers Market or the “olive oil guy” in Napa, food was always there. She taught Laura that sometimes you need “just a little bit - not too much “ when adding that special ingredient. “Everything I bake has a touch of Mormor.” It is quite easy to see that this is what Laura was meant to do.
All of these businesses are located in the North End area of Manhattan Beach. We’re going to discuss their efforts in the continuing development of the North End business community.
