    Thanksgivings 2014

    in Politics

    October 3, 1863
By  Abraham Lincoln President of the United States of America.

The year that is drawing towards its close, has been filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies. To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the source from which they come, others have been added, which are of so extraordinary a nature, that they cannot fail to penetrate and soften even the heart which is habitually insensible to the ever watchful providence of Almighty God. In the midst of a civil war of unequaled magnitude and severity, which has sometimes seemed to foreign States to invite and to provoke their aggression, peace has been preserved with all nations, order has been maintained, the laws have been respected and obeyed, and harmony has prevailed everywhere except in the theatre of military conflict; while that theatre has been greatly contracted by the advancing armies and navies of the Union.  It has seemed to me fit and proper that they should be solemnly, reverently and gratefully acknowledged as with one heart and one voice by the whole American People. I do therefore invite my fellow citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next, as a day of Thanksgiving

    the clarkie-connection thanksgiving special

    in Lifestyle

This month, as we make our long awaitied return  to the air, we have a special treat in store as we dedicate this program to a celebration of the holiday season, specifically, Thanksgiving.  As such, we're going to take a radical departure from our usual format and perform for you tonight...a play of sorts, starring the newly christened "clarkie-playhouse performers", that's a throwback to the old playhouse 90/radio serial formats from back in the day.  Tonight's three act play is dedicated to our children and is called, "Thanksgiving Day;" and it's all about the pilgrims who first landed on this continent and the ordeals they faced, as well as the first native americans with whom they came into contact.  After that, we'll take a short break and follow up with a free-form segment where we're all going to discuss Thanksgiving and what it means to each of us, as well as dole out some trivia and drop some knowledge.  So, tune in, sit back, relax, and let us entertain you this evening!

Connie Baxter Marlow shares her theory that the coming together of the visionary leaders of the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag Indians set the stage for the creation of the American Mind and the American Spirit, a radically different spirit and mentality from the European. The peace treaty that the Massasoit and the Pilgrims drafted and signed on their first meeting was upheld for over 50 years. She maintains that this coming together on such a high level set the stage for the coming of Peace on Earth as prophesied by the Native peoples.
