OR something like that...
Penny Sartori is a registered nurse who began researching Near Death Experiences (NDEs) in 1995 after one of her long-term intensive care patients begged her to let him die in peace. The event shook her deeply and eventually led her to enroll in a PhD program to research NDEs.
Sartori studied three samples of ICU patients during a five year period. The first consisted of 243 patients from the first year of data collection who survived their ICU experience. Of those, two experienced an NDE, and two an out-of-body experience (OBE). The second cohort consisted of survivors of cardiac arrest during the five year period. Of those, 39 patients (or 18%) experienced an NDE. The third cohort consisted of all the patients who experienced an NDE during the five year period.
One patient in particular, patient number 10, stands out for Sartori. “He was in bad condition,” she says. “When we put him into bed he was unconscious and unresponsive. Later he reported an OBE. He was accurately able to tell us which doctor was in the room and what he had said while he was unconscious. He claimed to have met his deceased father and a Jesus-like figure. But the most extraordinary part was that afterwards he was able to use his hand, which had been paralyzed since birth. There is no medical explanation for how that healing occurred.”
Sartori says, “In medicine, we’re trained to believe that the brain gives rise to consciousness. My research into NDEs has made me question this prevailing paradigm, which admittedly is very widespread. The most important lesson for me has been a deeper appreciation for death and a whole lot less fear and anxiety about it.”
In addition to detailing dozens of case studies, the book also discusses childhood NDEs, differences in NDEs among different cultures, and the after-effects of NDEs--one of which is the inability, in some patients, to wear a wrist-watch.
In 1973, there were just 134 inmates on death row throughout the country. In 1982, that number rose to 1,050 inmates. Since 1982, the population of death row prisoners has been steadily increasing and has never dropped below 1,000 inmates. There are 3,125 people total on death row in America.
Who are these people? Are they all guilty or could any of them be innocent and be facing an unjust execution? Should we have a Dealth Penalty? Does it do what it is intended to do? Is it morally right? What is the cost, financially and otherwise? What are some of these stories and why should we ordinary, everyday people even care? Does anyone care and if so, who?
There are so many relative issues, as well; such as Mass Incarceration and what our core values as a nation should be vs. what they actually are. Don't miss this show! It will be educational, enlightening, emotional and in some cases, shocking! As always, we will not only point out the problems, but also the solutions and we will focus on the actions required to implement the solutions.

Tune in Tuesday April 15, at 8 PM CDT to listen to an in-depth discussion about the death penalty with death row exonerees Sabrina Porter and Derrick Jamison.
Sabrina Butler Porter was a Mississippi teenager who was convicted of murder and child abuse in the death of her nine-month-old son, Walter. She was sentenced to death in 1990. She was later exonerated of all wrongdoing and was released in 1995 after spending more than five years in prison and 33 months on death row. She is the only woman in the United States exonerated from death row.
Derrick Jamison was an innocent man who spent nearly 20 years on Ohio’s death row for a murder and robbery he did not commit. An eyewitness to the killing identified two men and neither of them was Derrick Jamison. This information was withheld from the defense, and his co-defendant was promised a reduced sentence in exchange for implicating Derrick. Misconduct and false testimony landed Derrick on death Row in 1985. Derrick spent 20 years on death row before his case was corrected in 2005.
Sabrina and Derrick are 2 of 144 people that have been exonerated from death row in the United States. According to Witness to Innocence, for every nine prisoners executed since the death penalty was reinstated in 1976, one innocent person was condemned to die and later exonerated. These statistics are completely unacceptable and make a strong argument for abolishing the death penalty.
