BENJA RUTABANA : NYUMA Y'IGIHE KIREKIRE ASOHOYE ALBUM YITWA AMNESIA

    in Politics Progressive

    HOST: Serge Ndayizeye

    GUEST: Benja Rutabana

I was just thinking...Drug War, Shock Doctrine and Ferguson, Missouri

    in Education

There is a phenomenon in the life of human beings where some of us do not look at the past in order to see the threads leading to the present and the future. When a child burns their hand on the stove that should tell them to be careful around that appliance and more specifically around fire. The fire is unemotional, it does not have a trigger for right and wrong and fire can be used and controlled to our benefit.  The fire of white supremacy and its destructive heat is emotional and the trigger is our very existence.

The difference is we know the fire can be good for warmth, cooking, watching and we see that to a point we can control the efficacy of the fire to a point.  Contrary to this is the idea we can’t control the racism and sexism like turning on an off a flame on a stove. It is almost like amnesia when it comes to our pain. We don’t believe that we, as human being can perpetually be abused by the other based on how they falsely see us, we don’t see that hate is at the core of this debate.

    Nicole's Guest:

Melissa Terry has had a unique journey that has taught her to navigate the inner labyrinth of her inner world. For the first 20 years of her life she experienced abuse of every kind. Her survival became dependent upon a certain kind of selective amnesia in which she kept the unimaginable trauma from her conscious life in order to cope well enough to continue living. Early in her 20’s she started a journey of recovery and healing. She realized that in order to change her life from what it had been to what she desired she was going to have to remember what she had been keeping hidden from herself and find a way to re-member, or bring back together, all of those pieces in order to be whole.

In addition to her metaphysical studies and being highly intuitive, Melissa has over 14 years experience in corporate business helping companies generate greater success by creating alignment strategies through strategic development, process architecture and team engagement. She has a real ability to bring into balance the logical/analytical and the creative/intuitive. She is also a certified Hypnotherapist and has a degree in Art History and Humanities.

Melissa is the CEO of Edin International:

Her specialties include dealing with child sexual abuse, interpersonal violence, trauma, psychotherapy, consultation, mental health issues, the role of emotions in our lives, abuse and trauma. She's also the author of "Repressed Memories: A Journey In Healing from Child Sexual Abuse," a self help book for survivors of abuse with amnesia about significant aspects of the trauma. Renee has some 44 years of experience working with child abuse and in psychotherapy with adults, couples, families, adolescents, children and infants. Works with abuse, trauma, depression, anxiety, traumatic amnesia, marital issues, chemical dependency and spiritual issues. Her goals include continuing to work toward preventing trauma and family violence and educating professionals and the public on mental health issues. "I've lectured across the U.S. and Canada. I especially like talking about infant and early childhood sexual abuse, stalking of sexual abuse victims and emotional processing in recovery. Also resilience is a topic I am exploring," Renee says, adding that she enjoys teaching folks about repressed memories, too. She goes on, "Besides doing all that training, my audio and video sets have been purchased by over 250,000 survivors and professionals. So now I've started doing storytelling in the past year. I did my first story for the Minnesota Moth StorySlam sponsored by National Public Radio and won. So now I'm in the finals and my story is for sale on theMoth.org website."
