My Jonestown Experience: The Lure of Cults with Laura Johnston Kohl

    in Culture

Tonight we welcome author and Jonestown survivor Laura Johnston Kohl to the show. When 914 members of Peoples Temple and four visiting Americans died in Guyana, South America on November 18, 1978, Laura Johnston Kohl survived.  She was one of 87 who lived through the trauma.

After participating with the Black Panthers, and attending Woodstock, Laura moved into Peoples Temple in California in 1970, and was an active and enthusiastic member until the day it ended.  She moved to Guyana in March 1977.  She frequently traveled between Georgetown and Jonestown, a 24-hour boat ride, but moved into Jonestown in October 1978.  Laura’s survival was a fluke.

It took twenty years for Laura to rebuild her life and have the determination to research this tragedy.  The first ten years were spent in Synanon.  Then, she reunited with many of the other survivors to put the pieces together and to get some understanding.  After ten years she wrote her autobiography.

    Hugh O'Brian: Actor and Humanitarian

    in Movies

Hugh O'Brian, best-known for portraying legendary lawman Wyatt Earp, talks about his acting career as well as HOBY, his successful youth leardership project, in this special episode. O’Brian’s movies include such popular releases as The Shootist, Ten Little Indians, Come Fly with Me, and Twins. With the help of his lovely wife, Virginia, he’s also written a memoir titled Hugh O’Brian, or What’s Left of Him -- just in time to celebrate his 90th birthday on April 19! One of the few remaining classic Western stars, O'Brian has amazing stories of an era in entertainment that there soon will be too few who can share in first person. Friends, family and fans have been encouraging Hugh to finish his autobiography for several years.  The book chronicles many never before published stories about Marilyn Monroe, the Marine Corps, living at the House of Seven Garbos, meeting Albert Schweitzer, and being shot between the eyes on the set of The Shootist because the director wanted a film shot without interruption, which wouldn’t allow for the use of a stuntman. O’Brian’s impressive showbiz resume includes 7 Broadway shows, 33 films and 450 television shows. He has a well-deserved star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and a Golden Globe Award.

Virginia O’Brian, film historian James Colt Harrison, and Classic Movie Guide founder Diana Saenger will also participate in this celebration of Hugh O’Brian’s upcoming 90th birthday. Happy Birthday, Hugh!

Why Is Emily Wallace Scarred for Life

    in Writing

Emily Wallace is a motivational speaker and inspirational author of her unforgettable autobiography, Scarred for Life, an inspirational book that illustrates the struggles that she faced during her childhood.

One day in 1980, Emily returned home from her daily learning environment, to find a house filled with nothing but emptiness. Her mother and her siblings were gone without leaving a forwarding address. This was the same day that Emily endured emotional distrust and experienced her childhood being snatched away from her within moments.

After being abandoned by her mother, Emily realized that living on the dangerous streets of a major metropolitan city was a prerequisite to survival. While spending the remaining of her childhood on the streets, Emily experienced hunger that was so bad, it led to her eating out of the city owned garbage cans.

However, hunger was by far not the only horrific thing that Emily encountered as a motherless child struggling to bear with the pressure of being homeless. Aside from experiencing deadly hunger, Emily also faced things ranging from being brutally beaten by a 28 year old to losing her innocence at the age of eleven, after being forcefully raped by 2 grown men.

Scarred for Life narrates Emily's story, along with her thoughts, feelings, and emotions as she tried to succeed surviving on the streets. She tells of sleeping in vacant houses and under porches and experiencing child molestation by her older two brothers. She shares the stories of those who tried to help her and those who would not. Honest and shocking, Scarred for Life provides insight into the actual life of a little homeless girl and the horrors one can experience when living on the streets.

Freeway Ricky Ross Ex-drugkinPin turned Author & Motivational Speaker

    in Entertainment

Former drug trafficker turned author  of Untold Autobiography Rick
Ross alleged that hip-hop is a government weapon.

“I believe that what they’ve done is that they’ve taken hip-hop and made it glorious to be a drug dealer,” explained Ross. “You know when I sold drugs, I hid. I didn’t want anybody to know I sold drugs, but now, they’ve got these guys who’ve never sold drugs.” Ross then brought up how the rapper Rick Ross, who worked as a corrections officer and stole the former drug dealer’s identity.

“The message that it tells our kids is that if you go out, sell drugs, then you can become a great rock star… and never go to prison,” noted Ross. “That’s a false message to be giving people who feel hopeless.”

When asked if he was angry at rapper Rick Ross for stealing his identity, the real Rick Ross says he’s “angry at the whole culture.” Ross says he’s not really upset at the rapper because he doesn’t believe the rapper understands that he’s a pawn in a much larger game.

Ross noted that it’s harder for him to get into schools and teach kids an anti-drug message than it is for a rapper to reach kids.

Freeway Ricky Ross."Crack In The System" which premierd on  AlJAEERA, . Yes he will be my guest March 23, 2015 at 6:30PM PST on Let's talk Real talk with Tough cookie.
