I was just thinking...Storytellers! Anansi, Aesop, and your Grandmother!

    in Education

The people in my family are griots.

A griot is a West African term for a storyteller of family, tribe, nation and cultural history.

A griot (/'gri.o?/; French pronunciation: ?[g?i.o]), jali or jeli (djeli or djéli in French spelling) is a West African historian, storyteller, praise singer, poet and/or musician. The griot is a repository of oral tradition and is often seen as a societal leader due to his traditional position as an adviser to royal personages. As a result of the former of these two functions, he is sometimes also called a bard.

"Though [the griot] has to know many traditional songs without error, he must also have the ability to extemporize on current events, chance incidents and the passing scene. His wit can be devastating and his knowledge of local history formidable".

Although they are popularly known as "praise singers", griots may use their vocal expertise for gossip, satire, or political comment.

Who do we have from our community that will have precise political commentary?

We are hidden away from commentary that will help our people because our time in front of the fire talking to our ancestors and our elders has been eliminated and the ideas of the dominate culture that is filtered through the televisions have become our concern and our touchstone.

Let's tell our stories and keep our culture alive!

Friday nite 5pm pacific time or 8pm eastern time

Alzheimer's Caretaker, Dr. Nate Hare talks about journey wife Dr.Julia Hare

    in Family

The Gist of Freedom is asking you to join us as we support Dr. Nathan Hare and his wife as they struggle with Alzheimer's. http://www.gofundme.com/Let-Her-Be-Free

"Dr. Julia Hare has been living with Alzheimer’s for several years and was she was recently diagnosed with the End Stage of the condition. Her health providers refused to treat her on an outpatient basis without confinement ( if you are determined to leave and expressly “go home,” they label you a “wanderer” and lock the door.  When I would go to see her in her locked situation, at the end of the visiting hour I would have to conspire with the staff to distract her in order for me to ease out the door and slip away without her. On the other side of the slamming door, secured by the loud click of the prison-like lock, I would hear her realizing my exit and banging on the door and calling my namel.”

I took a physician and a lawyer as well as a retired judge and with me and went out and brought her home. Almost as soon as we got home she was getting better.

Although most of her medical costs are now being paid by her health insurance company, the cost of caregivers is staggering and relentless.

Four years ago when we were undeniably blindsided by this diabolical and incurable condition, several persons suggested that I let it be known and accept donations to help preserve the freedom and dignity of the proud and inimitable lady I promised, fifty-seven years ago, to protect and “To Love and to Cherish”.

I am now following their advice and posting this donation request. Although we are advised by the Good Book to share and share alike, keep in mind that it’s the little things that count and, as one of Aesop's fables reminds us, no act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted."

On the Air With Sierra Kay

    in Entertainment

Author and public speaker Sierra Kay's love of the written word was predestined.  Her mother concerned with the state of the public education system in Chicago encouraged her to read anything that she could get her hands on, including the spelling bee word list that appeared in the Chicago Tribune each year.

She was weaned on books like Anne of the Green Gables and Tale of Two Cities.  She snuck in romance novels that she hid between her mattresses.  However, her favorite book growing up was Aesop's Fables, which she feels puts her in an excellent position to share the moral's of her personal stories, whether people are interested or not.

Kay has an M.A. in Writing from DePaul University, won a Nuyorican Poets Cafe Short Story Slam and participated in Women’s Funny Fest as a member of the comedy troupe Spankx.  In addition to writing novels, she is a member of N2O Comedy in Chicago.

John Carver Show - There is no Victory...

    in Christianity

    There is no victory

    …without a team

Ecclesiastes 4 - 9 Two are better than one because they have a good return for their labor. 10 For if [c]either of them falls, the one will lift up his companion. But woe to the one who falls when there is not [d]another to lift him up. 11 Furthermore, if two lie down together they [e]keep warm, but how can one be warm alone? 12 And if [f]one can overpower him who is alone, two can resist him. A cord of three strands is not quickly torn apart. NASB

Living Bible says - 9 Two can accomplish more than twice as much as one, for the results can be much better. 10 If one falls, the other pulls him up; but if a man falls when he is alone, he’s in trouble.

11 Also, on a cold night, two under the same blanket gain warmth from each other, but how can one be warm alone? 12 And one standing alone can be attacked and defeated, but two can stand back-to-back and conquer; three is even better, for a triple-braided cord is not easily broken.

GREAT leaders understand that they can’t lead well without people who are around them that do their jobs well.

Real leaders, at every level, doesn’t need to have all the answers and endless levels of strength.

Have you ever heard of the Aesop Fable, “The Belly and the Members?”

One day it occurred to The Members (parts) of the Body that they were doing all of the work while the Belly got all of the food. They believed the Belly was lazy and unproductive.

It was decided that they would hold a meeting that evening to discuss how unfair this seemed. After what was a very long meeting that night it was voted on that The Members of the Body would go on strike until the Belly agreed to take its proper share of the work....
