Indie Books Show #66 (Mary Barr)

    in Books

Tune in and join me as I welcome this week's guest.
Author Mary Barr joins me this week to talk about her books.  We'll discuss her novellas, novels & juvenile fiction titles.
    From her novella The Publisher:
Each day with trust and good faith we send our beloved children off to school. We assume they arrive safely, enjoy time with their friends and learn their lessons. We think we know where they are and who they’re with. But life can change in a heartbeat, so can circumstances, places and people and, as a result we never remain the same. Change is often good, sometimes bad, but always constant. The Publisher takes you into the lives of the Smelt family. Joe, Suzanne and their two children, six year old Libby and thirteen year old Connor.
It is a normal school day just like any other, until Joe – the publisher – begins reading a manuscripts. In the manuscript he learns that his children are not at school. They have been kidnapped and are being held hostage until the ransom is paid. Each detail of what he must do is precisely laid out as another page of the manuscript unfolds. Suzanne has done someone wrong and, if she can right the situation her children will go free, if not, they will die. And so, they sit and wait for the knock on the door and the next installment of the manuscript that holds within its pages their children’s fate.

Walking the Woods and the Water: In Patrick Leigh Fermor's footsteps from the Hook of Holland to the Golden Horn:

In 1933, the eighteen-year-old Patrick Leigh Fermor set out in a pair of hobnailed boots to chance and charm his way across Europe, "like a tramp, a pilgrim, or a wandering scholar." The books he later wrote about this walk, A Time of Gifts, Between the Woods and the Water, and the posthumous The Broken Road are a half-remembered, half-reimagined journey through cultures now extinct, landscapes irrevocably altered by the traumas of the twentieth century.

Aged eighteen, Nick Hunt read A Time of Gifts and dreamed of following in Fermor's footsteps. In 2011 he began his own "great trudge"—on foot all the way to Istanbul. He walked across eight countries, following two major rivers and crossing three mountain ranges. With only Fermor's books to guide him, he trekked some 2,500 miles through Holland, Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria and Turkey.

His aim? To have an old-fashioned adventure. To slow down and linger in a world where we pass by so much, so fast. To discover for himself what remained of hospitality, kindness to strangers, freedom, wildness, adventure, the mysterious, the unknown, the deeper currents of myth and story that still flow beneath Europe's surface.

Indie Books Show #65 (Gary Reilly)

    in Books

Tune in and join me as I welcome this week's guests.
This week, I'll be doing my first posthumous interview.  No, I won't be speaking to the author from the other side (that's another blogtalk radio category).  I will be interviewing two gentlemen who knew Gary Reilly very well in life and were given the approval to seek publication for his books after his death.
When he was alive, Gary Reilly devoted his life to perfecting his writing - not seeking agent or publishers. He posthumously gave his books into the hands of Mike Keefe, a retired political cartoonist and Pulitzer Prize winner, and Mark Stevens, a former journalist and acclaimed author in Colorado, for publishing.
Of the first five titles – “The Asphalt Warrior,” “Ticket to Hollywood,” “The Heart of Darkness Club,” “Home for the Holidays” and “Doctor Lovebeads” – two hit No. 1 on the Denver area bestsellers list and two have been nominated for the Colorado Book Award.
Tune in Friday at11AM EST or listen to the archive.

    THE WORLD'S MOST HAUNTED HOUSE:

In this unprecedented work, the story of the 1974 Bridgeport, Connecticut poltergeist is at last revealed. A crowd of more than 2,000 onlookers gathered. National media reported jumping furniture, floating refrigerators, and attacking entities.

Decades after the publicity quieted, more than 40 hours of never-before-released interviews with police officers, firefighters, and others tell the story as it actually unfolded:

Have access to revealing excerpts from actual interviews, police reports, and rare documents.
Access unreleased audio, poltergeist sounds, and an old radio broadcast.

Return to 1974 and feel the Lindley Street experience from the inside. Find out why it is deemed the haunting that should have brought the paranormal into mainstream science.

"The World's Most Haunted House grabbed me from the beginning... it is a page turner. This work is a contribution to the nonfiction paranormal genre and one that needs to be read."

--Edwin F. Becker, author of True Haunting

"As an eyewitness to the Lindley Street case, I have been very impressed by the author's painstaking research and his determination to hunt down the facts of this case. Bill Hall is one
of the few to get it right!"

    AN IMPOSITION:

Henry Cross made a mistake; in fact he made two. The first was to spy for the Soviet Union inside a top-secret U.S. Department of Energy nuclear weapons laboratory. The second was to get caught. When the KGB finds out Henry Cross is a defector, it orders a second mole at Monroe Laboratory to kill Cross in a conspicuous manner. Other KGB agents need to be reminded that disloyalty will not be tolerated. Upon discovery of the murder, the DOE, FBI, and Monroe security conclude that another spy is operating at the site. Not wanting to reveal its intelligence to the mole or create a media circus at a top-secret lab, DOE covers up the murder.
Into this situation walks Ed Cotter, a newly recruited cold warrior. In a world where hyper-enforced federal regulations and their unintended consequences are the norm, Ed proves himself to be a positive addition to the staff. But one of his colleagues, Curtis Judd, is less than thrilled. Judd provokes Cotter in not so subtle ways, letting him know that he isn’t welcome at Monroe. But Ed Cotter isn’t leaving. In the meantime, the hunt for the spy continues, and Cotter gets drawn into it.
An Imposition is the first in a series of books based on events at the Department of Energy’s top-secret Monroe nuclear weapons laboratory during the boom years of the Reagan administration.
