Open to God, Despite Coming or Present Disaster

    in Religion

Serving God, in a manner maintaining Heaven as the objective, requires the ability, even a willingness, to confront and overcome adversity.  I'm not talking about the popular "God knows what you're going through and He will bring you out" approach to troubles, but rather the manner of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego, who answered King Nebuchadnezzar's threat (promise) to burn them alive thusly:

"If this be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of your hand, O king. But if not, be it known to you, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the golden image that you have set up.” Daniel 3:17-18

We are to "endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ."  During combat, the good soldier, under fire, does not refuse the orders of his commander, or close his heart; he remains open to that voice of authority, as part of his commitment to serve.

Similarly, we should not allow the "light afflictions" of this life should not close our hearts to God. Instead, despite the natural tendency toward self-defense which would close us off from any source of pain, we should train ourselves to not only see Christ in our disasters, but also strive even harder to reach out to Him in our distress, knowing what can occur if we but touch the hem of His garment...

Refusing to be Enemies: The Zeitouna Story

    in Culture

Zeitouna is Arabic for "olive tree" or "olive".  In the sumer of 2002, a unique sisterhood was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan, comprised of six Arab and six Jewish women.  Naming themselves Zeitouna, they unknowingly embarked on a life-changing journey, both personal and socio-political.  Committing to learn to hear each voice in the group has permanently joined them across the divide of their ancestral communities.  Zeitouna's mission is to embody and promote the peaceful and just coexistence of the Arab and Jewish peoples through connection, trust, empathy, and actions focused on supporting a sustainable future for Palestine and Israel.

Huda Karaman Rosen is a Palestinian living in America since 1962, an advocate for social justice and peace efforts, retired from the health care and education fields, and co-founder of Bustan al-Funun: Foundation for Arab Arts in America.  She has been involved in mediation and conflict resolution since 2008.

Laurie White is a filmmaker, mediator, psychotherapist, community organizer, yoga practitioner and singer-songwriter.  She was privileged to be entrusted with documenting the Zeitouna's evolution in her film "Refusing to Be Enemies -- the Zeitouna Story".  She is a founding member of Zeitouna.

Wadad Abed was born and raised in Nablus Palestine and immigrated to the US in 1968. She is active in efforts that focus on crossing divides and building bridges. Wadad co-founded Bustan Al-Funun to support Arab Arts in America. She is a member of the Senate of the University Musical Society, and is past president of the Board of Directors of ACCESS.

The Role of Women in Conflict Negotiation and Peaceful Settlements Nationally and Internationally in the black community

What are we discussing? Roughly a fortnight ago, we discussed how women have and continue to contribute to resolving conflicts and bringing peace in the community.

Since this year, the death toll arising from community warfare has been alarming. In South Sudan alone, over 10,000 people have died. The recent concern addresses the large number of conflicts in Africa compared to past decades. Some organizations have taken the bull by the horn to empower women to play a role in peace keeping. According to a United Nations article “In 1993, women made up 1% of deployed uniformed personnel. In 2012, out of approximately 125,000 peacekeepers, women constitute 3% of military personnel and 10% of police personnel in UN Peacekeeping missions”.

Why are we discussing it? According to the United Nation, “female peacekeepers act as role models in the local environment inspiring women and girls in often male-dominated societies for their own rights and for participation in peace processes”. We, at World Ebony Network want to know what women did to participate in conflict negotiations and in peaceful settlements in the community and how those traditional practices can transcend in today’s world.

Our April 4th Peace Talk will continue to explore this topic with the following leader(s) in community:

Dr. Francesca Nkadi, Ms. Marieme Dembele, Ms. Sandra Knight,  Ms. Yeatoe Mcintosh,  Mrs. Catherine Bradley, Ferris D. R. Foote

    Host: Dr. Ezi Mecha

WHAT PEOPLE CALL YOU IS NOT AS IMPORTANT AS WHAT YOU RESPOND TOO!

    in Religion

The prince of the eunuchs evidently thought their names were inappropriate, so renamed them in honor of the gods of Babylon. Thus, Daniel became Belteshazzar (“Favored by Bel”); Hananiah became Shadrach (“Illumined by Rak,” the sun god); Mishael was renamed Meshach (“Belonging to Shak,” the wine goddess); and Azariah was changed to Abednego (“Servant of Nego,” considered to be equivalent to Lucifer). One can imagine that this was deeply resented by these godly young men, who resolved more firmly than ever to stay true to the true God of creation, at all costs.  Dan 1:7

Shadrach; Meshach and Abednego WAS Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah

IS YOUR NAME MORE POWERFUL THAN GOD?

Daniel's name means “God is my judge”.......
it was changed to Belteshazzar, which means “favored by Bel.”

MAN IS NAME AND NAME IS MAN.

Hananiah's means “Beloved of the Lord” was changed to Shadrach which means “illumined by Rak,” the sun god).

Mishael (“Who is as God?”) was called Meshach (“who is like Shak,” the Babylonian Venus), and Azariah (“The Lord is my help”) became Abednego (“servant of Nego,” the god of fire).

WHAT PEOPLE CALL YOU IS NOT AS IMPORTANT AS WHAT YOU RESPOND TO!!

GOD HONORS HIS WORD ABOVE HIS OWN NAME!
