The Most Powerful Strategy Women Owned Businesses Can Implement to Grow Business

    in Business

As of 2012, it is estimated that there are more than 8.3 million women-owned businesses in the United States, generating nearly $1.3 trillion in revenue. Many large corporations now understand that it makes good business sense to spend dollars with women-owned vendor firms. Corporate management knows it is good for the public relations and for their local communities, but most importantly for the value they get from the dollars spent with women-owned companies.

Certification as a woman owned business can help women reach markets they could not reach on their own. Being certified as a Women Owned Business Enterprise matches women with the corporate entities they desire.

This week I am interviewing my business partner in an exciting initiative we offer to help WBEs prepare themselves for corporate business. Cheryl El-Alf, President of Diverse Supply Chain Partner  is on a mission to help WBE (Women Business Enterprise) executives and their leadership teams to implement the strategies necessary to grow their business within the corporate supply chain.

Chery’s background is unique and diverse.  Her knowledge of, and working experience in supplier diversity programs includes the Small Business Administration’s 8A program in addition to Corporate America’s W/MBE programs.   She has mastered the skill of leveraging these programs to not only help the W/MBE businesses achieve their financial goals; but also the Corporate Supply Chain’s diverse spend goals.  She refers to this as a “win-win” situation.

Join us today to learn about WBE certification and its advantages .The benefits of becoming certified and examples of the impact that using this strategy has had for other women in business.

    Indie Books #77 (Nicholas Duncan)

    in Books

Tune in and join me as I welcome this week's guest.

Author Nicholas Duncan joins me this week to talk about his book: Tales From A Muzungu

Imagine you are on a plane to a destination you know very little about. On top of that, you don't know anyone else, will be living there for two years, only have a vague idea of what you will be doing, or if it was the right decision. A major comfort is knowing that you aren't the only person having anxiety during this scenario. This is just the beginning of a Peace Corps volunteer’s service. Tales from a Muzungu is about a Peace Corps Volunteer’s two year experience (2010 – 2012) in Uganda. Nicholas Duncan covers the highs and lows of life in Africa by detailing the atmosphere of Uganda and the day to day life of a volunteer. Nicholas writes about his experience with non-profits, adjusting to deep village life, and the surprises of being a muzungu in Africa.

The Frugal Foodie with Host Terree Rola talks about Craft Beer in San Diego

    in Food

San Diego County has been called "the Craft Beer Capital of America," home to 97 licensed breweries & brewpubs, with 41 more in the planning stages. San Diego County's numerous internationally recognized and award-winning breweries have created a beer culture that is a draw for foodie and craft beer tourism, particularly during major festivals such as San Diego Beer Week. Launched in 2009, San Diego Beer Week is now a ten-day county-wide festival, held in early November and aimed at both local residents and tourists. In 2012 there were more than 500 events scheduled during Beer Week!

For the first part of the show, I'll be talking about the influence of craft beer and the craft breweries on the food scene in San Diego County. For the second half, I will be joined by Executive Chef Alex Carballo, Former Executive Chef for Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens, who recently partnered with industry veteran, Jon Mangini, to launch URBN Coal Fired Pizza in El Cajon. He will be talking with me about how the beer culture is growing in the East County; and, about the upcoming EC Craft Beer Invitational benefiting local charities that serve adults and children with developmental disabilities and the San Diego Brewers Guild.

    EC Craft Beer Invitational
Sunday, March 15, 2015 from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM (PDT)
    El Cajon, CA

Violet ReikiRadio - Guest Sheldon Marc Feldman M.D. FACS,

    in Health

Dr. Sheldon Feldman is chief of breast surgery at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center and assistant professor of surgery at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons where he oversees the breast cancer surgery program at the Comprehensive Breast Center of the Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia, and work in close collaboration with a multidisciplinary team of radiologists, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, plastic surgeons and other breast cancer support staff.

Dr. Feldman is helping to pioneer the use of the ductoscope, a tiny endoscope inserted through the patient's nipple used for diagnosis, surveillance and treatment of cancer patients. His research using the device may help lead to a simple test for early diagnosis that could eventually be the equivalent of a Pap smear for breast cancer. Dr. Feldman anticipates that the intraductal approach will ultimately be used to treat early breast cancer as well as ablating the milk ducts to prevent cancer development for high-risk women as an alternative to mastectomy.

A leader in minimally invasive breast cancer surgery, Dr. Feldman was instrumental in developing the transmammary axillary lymph node evaluation (TANE) procedure, which requires only a single incision for lumpectomy and sentinel lymph node biopsy. He is also an expert in oncoplastic skin-sparing and nipple-preserving mastectomy.

His research interests are focused on preventing the disease through a better understanding of environmental toxins linked to breast cancer, including chlorinated pesticides, PCBs and PBDEs, and he is helping to investigate new biopharmaceutical treatments, including green tea extract and vitamin D.
