In 2008, Jamiel Shaw, II (17 yrs. young), was assassinated three doors from his home; by an illegal alien gangbanger from Mexico. Chimia Y. Hill-Burton, born in Chattanooga, Tennessee in December of 1981, was raised in Giessen, Germany, and resides in Atlanta, Georgia.

Decrying big banks as having been behind the financial crisis of 2008, O'Malley singled out Goldman Sachs for particular criticism. Curtis L. Crisler was born and raised in Gary, Indiana. He received a BA in English, with a minor in Theatre, from Indiana University Purdue University, and received his MFA from Southern Illinois University Carbondale. His books are Pulling Scabs (Willow Books; nominated for a Pushcart), Tough Boy Sonatas (Wordsong) and Dreamist, a YA mixed-genre novel (Aquarius Press). He edited the nonfiction book,Leaving Me Behind: Writing a new me, and his Spill won the 2008 Keyhole Chapbook Award from Keyhole Press. He is an Associate Professor of English at (IPFW), and the recipient of fellowships from Cave Canem, Soul Mountain, guest resident at Hamline University, the recipient of the Sterling Plumpp First Voices Poetry Award, an Indiana Arts Commission Grant, the Eric Hoffer Award, and nominated for the Eliot Rosewater Award.

Vikki Hankins – An Advocate for The Civil Rights of EX-Felons in The State of Florida
As part of our CBBN Business Journals Segment we will interview business owners from around the country.
In 1990, Ms. Hankins was sentenced to 23 years d 4 months in federal prison. She was released in March 2008 -- 18 years later.
She is an advocate and in a battle with the State of Florida for the restoration of the rights of the ex-con.
“It’s a book at a time, it’s a speech at a time,” says Hankins. “I’m not standing still. Definitely not going backwards.

The Justice Department releases statistics on this and related issues, although these datasets are only periodically updated: It found that in 2008, among people who had contact with police, “an estimated 1.4% had force used or threatened against them during their most recent contact, which was not statistically different from the percentages in 2002 (1.5%) and 2005 (1.6%).” In terms of the volume of citizen complaints, the Justice Department also found that there were 26,556 complaints lodged in 2002; this translates to “33 complaints per agency and 6.6 complaints per 100 full-time sworn officers.” However, “overall rates were higher among large municipal police departments, with 45 complaints per agency, and 9.5 complaints per 100 full-time sworn officers.” In 2011, about 62.9 million people had contact with the police
[A]ccording to the CDC, in Oklahoma the rate at which black people are killed per capita by law enforcement is greater than anywhere else in the country. That statistic is taken from data collected for the years 1999-2011. During that same time period, Oklahoma’s rate for all people killed by law enforcement, including all races, is second only to New Mexico. However, Oklahoma, the District of Columbia, Nevada and Oregon are all tied for the rate at which people are killed. (The CDC treats the District of Columbia as a state when collecting and displaying statistics.) In Missouri, where Mike Brown lived and died, black people are killed by law enforcement twice as frequently as white people. Nationwide, the rate at which black people are killed by They note that among 36 different studies published since the 1980s, the rates of force asserted vary wildly, from a high of more than 30% to rates in the low single digits.

Juaquin Hawkins looked in the mirror and saw a disfigured face staring back at him. It was 9:15 a.m. and he was in a Townsville, Australia, hotel room. His fingers tingled, the right side of his body grew numb. He closed his eyes and prepared to die. It was New Year’s Day, 2008.
“Is this how I’m going to leave?” he wondered. “Doing something I love, away from my family?”
In the twilight of a professional basketball career, at 34 and in peak physical condition, the body he relied on to earn a living was giving way to a stroke. Throughout a life marked by false starts and dead ends, all he ever wanted was to provide for his family..
