On this week's special "extended edition" of Scottscope Talk Radio, the roundtable reviews Guillermo Del Toro’s new film Pacific Rim! Is it truly better than any of the Michael Bay Transformers films? Does it adequately capture the spirit of either Kaiju films or “Super Robot” anime? Why are Hollywood filmmakers so captivated by the “Super Robot” genre? Would Jeagers beat Autobots and/or Decepticons in a fight? Does Guillermo Del Toro have a better handle on how to film large scale battles involving giant robotic combatants than Michael Bay? Will there ever be a sequel? Are fanboys too concerned with box office tracking? Are modern audiences able to embrace any property that isn’t associated with an established brand name?
We’ll also be having a candid discussion about the George Zimmerman verdict. Does his acquittal set a horrifying new precedent? Has America openly declared war on young Black males? Are Zimmerman’s supporters delusional, hateful, or both? What, if anything, can be done to address this travesty of justice? Is the “Stand Your Ground” statute nothing more than a way to justify and sanction murder? Is American gun culture more to blame for this horrific tragedy than racism? Why is the ongoing violence in Chicago being brought into this discussion? Why do Zimmerman supporters keep using the phenomenon of so-called “Black on Black crime” as a way to trivialize Trayvon’s death? Should the United States be brought up on charges of genocide for its callous disregard for Black life?
