This week, the Scottscope roundtable will discuss Man of Steel! How does it compare to the Richard Donner Superman films? How does Henry Cavill compare to Christopher Reeve? Is he worthy of having the Superman shield emblazoned on his chest? Was Zack Snyder a suitable director for this kind of film given the lukewarm reaction to his adaptation of Watchmen? Did Christopher Nolan have any real influence on this project? Are his sensibilities wrong for a hero such as Superman? Does Nolan truly understand superheroes and what they represent? Does he even like them? Is the level of mass destruction in the film out of character for a hero like Superman? Is Man of Steel any better than Superman Returns? Has the Justice League film become a real possibility in light of Man of Steel’s opening weekend?
We’ll also be taking a look back at the Superman franchise as a whole. What was is the best Superman film to date? What is the worst? Are Superman III and Superman IV truly as bad as their respective reputations suggest? Is Superman Returns truly a bad film, or simply a bland and misguided one? Did Christopher Reeve provide the best live action incarnation of Superman/Clark Kent? Was Richard Donner’s version of Superman II truly better than Richard Lester’s? Is Superman still relevant in today’s world?
It's good to talk.
