It’s time to burn some muscle with the Scottscope roundtable. This week, we set our sights on the infamous “Sun Gym Gang” with our review of Pain & Gain! Why would Michael Bay decide to make a crime film at this point in his career? Was it a mistake for him to do so? Should he simply stick to his strengths instead of trying to grow as a filmmaker? Is this film truly a departure from his usual fare? Is it yet another exercise in empty stylistic excess? Is it an admirable failure, or an ego-driven debacle? Does Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson steal the show? Is he wasted in a haphazard mess of a film?
We’ll also be looking back at the career of Michael Bay up until this point. Is he as bad as his detractors say? Has he single handedly ruined the action genre with his style of filmmaking? Why do his films continue to succeed at the box office despite their perceived lack of quality? Is he a misunderstood genius who can only be appreciated in retrospect? Will it be a few more decades until he finally gets his due? Could the late Tony Scott be considered the father of his style? Should he allow someone else to do the next Transformers film?
